Logos 4.5 Beta 1
Logos 4.5 Beta 1
Logos 4.5 Beta 1 (Mac v4.50.0.1142 and Windows v4.50.0.1142) was released on October 12, 2011.
New Features
Notes and Highlighting
Interface
- Added controls for note text highlighting.
- When highlighting is added to selected text a note will now be added to the active, open Notes document, or to the most recently active Notes document if one is not currently open. (A note indicator will appear in the resource by default only when adding a note to a resource selection or reference, not when applying highlighting.)
- Existing applied highlighting is migrated into the Notes database. New Notes documents are created for each system and custom palette in which styles have been used to highlight text, with links to the location of the highlighting.
- When highlighting is applied, if the Highlighting panel is open, a message will appear at the bottom of the panel that reads ‘Annotation added to “Notes document title”.’ The title is a hyperlink to open the Notes document.
- Click on the note icon in the Notes document, which will open the Note Indicator/Note Color/Note Highlight drop-down, to change the ‘indicator’ color or style, ‘highlight’ color or style, or choose “No highlight” to toggle off highlight.
- Note indicator color palette includes shapes, more colors, and a “no note indicator” option.
- Selected highlight style will auto-scroll into view when the drop-down displays.
- Default is “Highlight with note color.”
- If “No highlight” is selected, choose “Highlight with note color,” or select from the available styles, to toggle on highlight.
- “Use this style by default” and “Reset” controls are provided to change the default from “Highlight with note color,” or to reset the note highlight back to that setting.
- Expanded/Collapsed state of highlight palettes is persisted.
- Deleting a palette that contains styles still in use will be prevented and the attempt will bring up a “# style is still in use” alert at the top of the Highlighting panel. The alert can be closed or left open until it disappears on its own in 10 seconds. Hovering over the alert will keep it open and display the styles in use and how many times each one has been applied.
- Deleting a style that is still in use will bring up a “Style is still in use” alert, with an option to move the annotation(s) to: “No highlight,” or to another style from the drop-down list, before clicking “Delete Style.” To close the alert without moving the annotation, click “Cancel.”
- “Import Delete Notes” command will only delete imported notes, leaving alone migrated imported visual markup.
- Displayed highlighting palette and style names will appear at the end of Information panel data when hovering over highlighted text.
- The Previous/Next buttons on the Locator Bar of a resource with Notes/Highlighting now include “Annotation” navigation, which replaces the “Highlight” navigation from earlier versions.
- Moved “New palette” function to toolbar.
- Added command menu buttons to the right of each palette, moved context menu (right-click) options to command menus, and removed context menus.
- Highlighting panel “Erase” function can be used to modify the text range of notes. If this splits the range into two portions, the note will be split into two notes and any content will remain on the first note. Important: When a full text range is erased, the note will be removed; therefore, when changing a highlight, click the note icon to select from the Note Color/Note Highlight drop-down rather than erasing one highlighting style and applying a different style.
Notes document
- Added Indent and Outdent controls to the right of the “Add note” link at top of Notes document panel. Clicking the Indent button will move a note to the right, to enable finer organization of notes. Clicking the Outdent button will move the note back to the left.
- Hyperlinked Citation will be automatically added to the end of pasted resource text in a note.
- Notes without content will display in “Compact” form unless the note is active.
- Pressing “Esc” in an active note will defocus and collapse the note. (See Known Issues for Windows.)
- “Remove annotations” option available on right side of resource context menu when selection contains a note. Selecting this option will delete note from Notes document and resource. Important: “Remove annotations” will not remove a note text range, as the “Erase” function mentioned above will do. It will remove the note completely.
- Added “Sort by reference.”
- Added “Sort by date added.”
- Added “Sort by title.”
- Added “Sort by note color.”
Notes Rich Text Toolbar
- Added Foreground and Background Color picker to rich text toolbar controls.
- Changed Hyperlink box to a popup window.
- Toolbar is enabled even when no note is selected.
Resource Panel
- Inline Footnotes are available in resources that include footnotes when the resource is in Paged view (Columns 1-5, Auto) and the “Show Footnotes on Page” option is enabled (default) in Program Settings in the General section.
Search
- Added a “My Content” search range to Basic Search, which searches Documents, Guides, and Personal Books.
Synchronization
- Sync v2 implemented for Notes, custom Highlighting styles, Favorites, and certain Preferences, such as SavedResourcePosition.

Bug Fixes
- Cited By
- Results will now be generated for Personal books that contain the selected reference.
- Exegetical Guide
- Fixed bug that prevented Word by Word section from generating results on James 1:7-8 for the NRSV Reverse Interlinear Bible.
- Graph Bible Results
- Fixed bug that caused a misalignment of the results when exporting to Excel. (See this thread.)
- Guides
- Fixed bug that did not automatically display default sections when launching edit guide template from panel menu of the default guide unless the report had already been run.
- Highlighting
- Fixed bug that caused Left and Right Margin Lines to be previewed in the same place as Left and Right Border Lines when editing a custom style. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that caused window to resize automatically when displaying long custom highlighting style/palette names.
- Fixed bug that prevented a new palette from being renamed until a style was added to it or another new palette was added.
- Fixed bug that allowed a custom palette to have the same name as a default palette. This caused confusion when both palettes were collapsed. In cases where a custom palette is given the same name as a default palette, when saved, the name will be appended with a (#), where # is equal to the instance of that name.
- Home Page
- Fixed bug that kept the day description from displaying in Lectionary item in Home Page ribbon. (See this thread.)
- Notes
- Fixed bug that occurred when adding a new note item to a document with notes displaying past halfway down the panel. The new note would cause the panel to scroll up even though extra display space was available. The fix prevents the panel from scrolling the list until the note items reach the bottom of the panel.
- Passage Analysis
- Compare Pericopes will now only display pericope sets for Bibles in the user’s library.
- Personal Books
- Added a “Rebuild Personal Book Index” command.
- Fixed bug that caused a URL containing a bookmark (#) to be truncated when used in a Word hyperlink. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that caused the Publisher to be duplicated in the resource info panel Citation section if the field was deleted and added again, and the book was recompiled. (See this thread.)
- If a book begins with Normal text before a Heading, or if there is no Heading text at all, the book’s Title will be the first entry in the Table of Contents pane.
- Improved consistency applying the correct Word style when converting documents.
- Changed shortcut to the Personal Books section of the Help files from a ‘How-To’ button to an icon. Also moved its location to the right side of the panel.
- Fixed bug that prevented hyperlink syntax from compiling correctly when a foreign language label was used. For example: [[א >> logosres:bdba;ref=BrownDriverBriggs.BDB_1.1]]
- Fixed bug that prevented images from displaying in the compiled resource when the .docx file was created in Word 2003. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that required the book be compiled in the English UI for Spanish and Swedish references to be auto-detected. The correct language must be set in the metadata to ensure auto-detection. (See Known Issues.)
- Fixed bug that prevented the numbers in captions for figures from being displayed. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that caused non-breaking hyphens to be ignored in the Table of Contents. (See this thread.)
- Added a ‘View log file...’ link to panel post-compilation for easy access to Personal Book log files.
- Added warning icon in edit view when the .docx file cannot be found in the location indicated.
- Fixed bug that caused a scroll bar in a relatively short footnote. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that caused Personal Books that had previously been deleted to show up on the ‘New Tab’ panel.
- Fixed bug that caused an “Error while building book: Could not remove existing resource” message after printing a personal book.
- Fixed bug that caused text within escape syntax to be processed rather than skipped during compilation. (See this thread.)
- Print/Export
- Fixed bug that did not correctly export citation information present in the preview window. (See Known Issues and this thread.)
- Program Settings
- “Reset Defaults” will now reset “Download updates between” times to “Midnight” and “Midnight.”
- Reading Lists
- Changed heading for search results from ‘10 reading lists found’ to ‘First 10 reading lists found’ for cases where there are more matching lists than those initially displayed.
- Reading Plan
- Fixed crash caused by adding a longer book (i.e. Genesis) and a shorter book (i.e. Jude) to the same plan stretching out over more sessions than verses in the smaller book.
- Resource Panel
- Removed Visual Filter drop down from the menu bar of media resources.
- Search Panel Basic
- Fixed bug that caused Topic section of the results to be missing after clicking on a topic search string in the topics section of the initial search. (See this thread.)
- Search Panel Bible
- Fixed bug that caused combined verses in Bibles like ‘The Message’ to display a second blank line in Grid view of the results.
- Fixed bug that caused different result counts in Grid view than the other result views.
- Sentence Diagram
- Added a slight margin around diagrams that are copied and pasted into an external program or sent to PowerPoint.
- Syntax Search Document
- Fixed linked location for the ‘?’ icon under the General tab. The icon now links to the ‘Syntax Search Advanced’ article in the Logos 4 Help files.
- Text Comparison
- Fixed bug that could cause Export function to export only the first verse of a multi-verse passage. (See this thread.)
- Visual Filters
- Fixed bug that caused just-added formatting (highlighting) to be removed after editing another style. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that caused label text to be repeated for words that contain more than one morph tag. (See this thread.)
Bug Fixes for Mac
- Bible Search
- Fixed bug that caused the “+Add Versions” box to be hidden and additional column to be lined up incorrectly after refreshing search panel.
- Fixed bug that caused the “+Add Versions” box to be dismissed too soon after version titles were deleted, preventing ability to press Enter to remove additional columns until the “+Add Versions” link was clicked to reopen the empty box.
- Fixed bug that required hitting the Enter key twice in the “+Add Versions” box to remove additional Bibles.
- Fixed bug that caused the additional translation images not to be dismissed when all the titles were deleted from the “+Add Versions” box.
- Fixed bug that caused instruction line in ‘Analysis’ view of results to be truncated.
- Highlighting
- Fixed bug that did not display the correct custom font color in the edit view. (See this thread.) (See Known Issues for Mac.)
- Fixed bug that prevented Highlighting panel from scrolling to renamed palette’s new position.
- Layouts
- Fixed bug that required multiple attempts when deleting a Layout.
- Personal Books
- Fixed bug that caused ‘Add Body Files’ section of the edit view to expand rather than insert a scroll bar.
- Print/Export
- Fixed bug that allowed both radio buttons for printing view to appear selected at the same time.
- Resource Panel
- Fixed bug that did not preserve column settings in a docked panel when entering and then exiting Reading View. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that caused white space and duplicate back/forward paging arrows to appear near the top of the panel after using arrow key to scroll down in a resource in one-column view. (See this thread.)
- Reverse Interlinear
- Fixed crash that could occur after multiple right-clicks in interlinear pane.
- Search Panel
- Fixed bug that caused ‘Next’ page link to display in ‘My Books’ section of results even if there were no relevant hits to display.
- Self Tests
- Fixed bug that caused the majority of the panel to be grey rather than panel background color when no tests had been started.
- Syntax Search Document
- Fixed bug in ‘Morphology’ section of the Specifics panel that prevented more than the first search term being added via mouse click or arrow key navigation.
- Text Comparison
- Improved selection of resources.
- Timelines
- Removed ‘Copy’, ‘Save As...’, ‘Print’, ‘Send to Powerpoint’, and ‘Send to Keynote’ from the panel menu. These items are available in the context (right-click) menu.
Bug Fixes for Windows
- Morph Search
- Fixed bug that caused the last morph criteria selected to be dropped from the search when selecting the terms using the mouse. (See this thread.)
- Personal Books
- Fixed bug that prevented auto scroll functionality when dragging .docx files to reorder documents within the “Add Body Files” section.
- Fixed bug that caused the Print/Export panel to support export only when Normal-style text was above the first Heading in the source document. (See this thread.)
- Fixed bug that prevented a Personal Book from opening without restarting the program if a search result from that book was clicked on while the book was recompiling. (See general Known Issues.)
- Prayer List
- New prayer items will now open expanded with the focus on the Prayer name box. (See Known Issues.)
Known Issues
- Highlighting
- The import highlighting command (and related commands) will not import highlighting (from Libronix DLS 3).
- Notes
- Localization needed for new Note Color/Note Highlight drop-down.
- Not all Background colors available in Notes in Logos 4 are available as Text Highlight Colors in Microsoft Word. Because of this, a Notes document exported to RTF and opened in Word, or sent directly to a Word document, may display an alternate background color. For example, the orange background color will display as yellow in Word.
- Personal Books
- There are a few remaining apocryphal books which are not auto-detected correctly in the Spanish and Swedish UIs.
- Spanish: Daniel (Adiciones Deuterocanónicas)
- Swedish: Salomos vishet, Jesus Syraks vishet, and Jeremias brev
- If a search result from a Personal Book is clicked while the book is recompiling a missing resource tab will open (on Windows, ‘You own this resource, but for some reason it is not in your library’, on Mac, ‘Resource Unavailable’) which is expected. If the tab is left open, but not active when the book finishing compiling, the program will switch to the resource missing tab. This tab must be closed and the Personal Book reopened to view the recompiled resource.
- Prayer List
- New Prayer Lists will initially open with one collapsed item.
- Print/Export
- Because of a limitation in Word, only the first exported item will correctly display the citation present in the preview window. For the inclusion of multiple citations, copy and paste the desired text into your document instead, which will automatically create footnoted citations.
- Resource panel
- Inline footnotes
- Biblical cross references and abbreviations appear in footnote region.
- If footnote content doesn’t flow to subsequent pages, some content may be missing from footnote region if it doesn’t fit.
- Hidden references (those in collapsible sections or hidden by visual filters like ‘Bible text only’) still have their footnotes shown on page.
Known Issues for Mac
- Font scaling
- Text size changes, using the text slider in Basic and Bible Search panels, may hang the program.
- Highlighting
- The tool tip for the second drop down from the top under ‘Image’ in the edit view for custom highlights is incorrectly listed as ‘Image Opacity’ and should, instead, be ‘Image Offset’.
- The Font Styling color button does not function until the new style is saved.
Known Issues for Windows
- Highlighting
- Panel does not scroll to renamed palette’s new position.
- Notes
- Pressing “Esc” in an active note will defocus, but not collapse the note.
