Metadata correction proposals – Addressed by Logos
This page lists metadata problems reported the Metadata correction proposals that have been addressed by Logos.
Note: Logos will update these when corrections are published
Special Issues
- Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia : SESB 2.0 Version - BHSSESB and BHSSESB2 have exactly identical metadata. Extremely confusing!
- This is an odd case, so I’m leaving this explanation here where it’s a little more visible. As you may have guessed, these two resources have the same metadata because they are the same book. It’s the digital equivalent of having two copies on your shelf. Why the duplication? Well, BHSSESB is an older resource, created to be used with Libronix and optimized for that purpose. It’s so old that when faced with the task of updating the code to play nice with Logos 5, it was actually easier to make a new one. Everyone who buys the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia 2.0 gets the new one from here on out, and everyone who already had BHSSESB got BHSSESB2 automatically.
- Textually, though, they’re identical, hence the identical metadata. If it’s a serious annoyance for you, there are ways to hide resources in your library so you won’t get the double listing. You still own the license for both, and you can unhide a hidden book at any time. ~Hayley Price
General Issues
- Ancient manuscripts: Ancient texts translated into English are best tagged as type:ancient manuscript; lang:English
- “Ancient manuscript” is reserved for transcriptions of ancient manuscripts. Modern translations don’t fall into this category.
- Bible commentaries vs Bible notes: Resources that comment on every verse of the Bible should be tagged as commentaries, those that comment briefly on some verses only, or which title themselves “Study Bible” should be tagged bible-notes.
- Logos’ use of these types is primarily functional rather than descriptive. The Commentary type is used for many different kinds of resources that are indexed by Bible verse and that the user may want to appear in the Passage Guide. Bible Notes are used for the Notes from a Bible, as, for instance, most of our “Study Bible” resources. Further breakdown of the Commentary category would be somewhat arbitrary, so it’s better left to user discretion via tags.
- All Lexicons should have appropriate ancient language as well as lang:English
- The language of a book is the primary language it is written in rather than the language it is about, so a Hebrew lexicon written in English is English, not Hebrew. A Greek grammar written in Spanish is Spanish, not Greek, etc.
- Journals: There’s a bunch of journals without the series tag. Semeia, Tyndale Bulletin and the Evangelical Review of Theology are the main culprits, but there are many others (BibSac vol 165, for example). Filter the library by type:journal and sort by series to see them all.
- All journals should now have series titles visible in the library pane.
- Authors and Publishers are listed multiple times with slightly different spelling (sort the library by author/publisher to see them).
- A lengthy author and publisher standardization project has reduced duplicate author and publisher names considerably.
- Publishers with widely used abbreviations (IVP for InterVarsity Press) – please include the abbreviation in parentheses
- We now have standardized publisher names in place. Many of the publishers with widely used abbreviations are referred to by those abbreviations in the library, and should be searchable by them.
- Publication Date is a mixture of digital publishing date, copyright date, original/revision date whilst a single date for the original/revision is preferred.
- Publication date fields with more than one year listed have been corrected to display the appropriate year. A notable exception: multivolume works published over a number of years and collected into a single resource are represented by multi-year ranges.
- Subjects content should be consistent e.g. include only the Secondary language (Greek, Hebrew, or Latin) & omit the Primary language which is tagged separately.
- Logos is working on cleaning up inconsistencies. Subjects are derived from the Library of Congress subject headings. For lexicons, this is consistently of the form “Hebrew language—Dictionaries—English.”
- Vyrso Books have different standards than Logos editions. They are much less dynamic and are only lightly tagged. As a result:
- Vyrso books don’t have subjects
- Vyrso books don’t have embedded milestones
- Vyrso books are all set to type:monograph. If there was an existing ‘trade book’ resource type we would be using that uniformly for all Vyrso books.

- History of Israel, The Books of the Old Testament, and Theology of the Old Testament (Hinson) – according to the Info panel these three books form an Old Testament Introduction series. According to the citations, they also belong to a TEF study guide series (which may include other Logos volumes). They are tagged for neither
- It looks like TEF Study Guides was renamed prior to this edition’s publication, so I’ve added the newer series name, SPCK International Study Guide, to all three. I’ve also updated the citations to reflect this series title and the revised edition’s publication information (after some headdesking). Regrettably, our series setup doesn’t like multiple series names, so I’ve had to leave out ‘Old Testament Introduction’ series for the time being. I’ll do a search of our library for more TEF and SPCK study guides as soon as I can devote the time to it.
- How to be Born Again by Billy Graham (Vyrso) – ‘Be’ should be capitalized (all verbs, no matter how short they are)

- Journey Into Holiness (Into should not be capitalized)
- Joy At The End of the Tether: The Inscrutable Wisdom of Ecclesiastes (“at” and “the” should not be capitalized)
- The JPS Torah Commentary (all volumes) – commentary should be capitalized in series name in citation info
- Lange’s Commentary (series) – publisher is listed as Logos, date 2008; but the series this Logos edition was made from was apparently published in New York by Bible House in 1868 and 1869 (see prefaces by the general editor, Philip Schaff, in the Genesis volume, Proverbs, and 1 & 2 Thessalonians); more research into the print edition on Logos’s shelves might be needed to get the date correct for each volume.
- This is a weird one, so bear with me. We try not to create ‘Logos reprints’ of public domain resources anymore, but we occasionally leave Logos information in when updating it would cause problems. The format in which we released these resources do not match the formatting of the original texts: the volumes are split up differently. If we were to apply the original publisher name to this resources, the result would be bibliographic citations that describe books that never existed. Rather than have this potentially cause problems for students using our resources in academic papers, we’re leaving them as they are. At least this way a professor will be able to pinpoint exactly which edition of the commentaries their students used.
- Lexham Greek-English Interlinear Septuagints - coeditor should be David A. deSilva. Currently two lists David A deSilva, and two David A De Silva.

Title Capitalization Errors (in citation)
- Citation capitalization works a little differently from library title capitalization—stand by for a long-winded explanation.
- We have a set of guidelines for library titles, and it breaks down to ‘Capitalize everything except conjunctions, prepositions, articles, etc...’ we actually have a list somewhere of every word that does not get cased, and we have tools in place to help with casing.
- Citations, on the other hand, are constructed using the citation builder Zotero. Zotero uses a slightly different set of title casing standards, but more importantly, it adjusts its casing standards based on which style guide you select from the dropdown. This only works if you input sentence cased titles. For a while, we tried take advantage of this feature. That way, if you’re citing in APA style, you’ll get a sentence cased title as APA prefers, and if you’re citing in CMS, Zotero will auto-title case it into something that CMS prefers.
- It turns out that sentence casing things is way harder than title casing them. Not only do you need context to identify proper nouns (a literal dahlia? Or someone named Dahlia?), but English has a ridiculously long laundry list of things that aren’t proper nouns but still need to be capitalized. Like adjectives based on proper nouns. This is why neither Zotero nor Logos has tools to sentence case. And trying to come up with consistent documentation for human reference was just as bad. It was the acronyms that broke me. There’s nothing sadder than an acronym that has been mistakenly lowercased.
- So some existing resources contain legacies of our experimentation. We opted not to go back and clean them up, because of the difficulty and because they are technically more functional than our current standards.

Other Corrections
- 131 Christians Everyone Should Know - includes headword index so type should be Encyclopedia, not Monograph
- I Corinthians: A New Translation, Introduction with a Study of the Life of Paul, Notes, and Commentary by William Orr & James Walther. Publication date (2008) is wrong. That’s the publication date of newer edition. This edition is copyright 1976 with no newer date mentioned inside the book.
- The answer to this one is a little weird, so bear with me. There is a newer date mentioned in the book: “First Yale University Press impression 2008.” We don’t usually capture reimpression years as publication dates, but the series was being rebranded from “The Anchor Bible” to “The Anchor Yale Bible”, and we treated the books as new editions at the request of the publisher.
- The 365 Day Devotional Commentary -> remove Bible—Commentaries from Subjects [Stet. This book functions as commentary too.]
- 2,200 Quotations from the Writings of Charles H. Spurgeon Citation info should not have “Trade pbk. ed.” as this is the digital edition, not the trade paperback.
- A number of books in English have French or other foreign language subjects; these should be translated where English equivalents are not already included, or else just deleted; Logos does not pretend to be International in its subjects so it should consistently use English only (there are only very few exceptions currently): Apologia Pro Vita Sua (Apologétique); Atonement for a ‘Sinless’ Society (Postmodernisme.; Verzoening.; Zonde.); Christ’s Proclamation to the Spirits (Bible. N.T. Pierre, 1re, III,18-IV,6—Critique, interprétation, etc.; The Esther Scroll: The Story of the Story (Esther—Critique textuelle.); A History of the Textual Criticism of the New Testament (Bible. N.T.—Critique textuelle); Journal of Hebrew Scriptures: Volume 9 (2009) (Bible. AT.—Critique textuelle—Périodiques.; Bible. AT.—Critique, interprétation, etc.—Périodiques.; Bible—Critique caonique—Périodiques.); Moses’ Veil and the Glory of the New Covenant (Bible. N.T. 2 Corinthiens 3—Critique textuelle; Bible. N.T. 2 Corinthiens 3—Critique, interprétation, etc.); The New Testament and the Palestinian Targum to the Pentateuch (Bible. N.T.—Critique, interprétation, etc.); The Origins and Early Development of Liberation Theology in Latin America (Église et problèmes sociaux—Amérique latine.; Pauvreté—Amérique latine—Aspect religieux—Église catholique; Théologie de la libération—Amérique latine.); Public Theology in Cultural Engagement (Theologie); Time for a Change: Reconfiguring Religion, State and Society (Religionssoziologie)
- A lot of these are informed by official Library of Congress Subject listings, and we tend not to remove subjects if they’re technically accurate.
- An Advanced Learner’s Arabic-English Dictionary - Lexicon not Dictionary
- Amplified Bible - title in citation is a bit excessive “The Amplified Bible, Containing the Amplified Old Testament and the Amplified New Testament”; change to “The Amplified Bible” – the rest is obvious and nobody would actually put all that in a citation
- Analytical Handbook of the Greek Text of the Letter to the Philippians should be type: Bible Commentary
- Analytical Key to the Old Testament should not be type:bible (perhaps type:Bible Notes?)
- Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary needs abbreviated title (ABD is the standard)
- Anchor Yale Bible Commentary all volumes are missing series name in citation information
- Ancient Near Eastern Texts Relating to the Old Testament - abbreviated title should be ANET, not the full title!
- Ancient Egyptian literature needs series tag
- Ancient Practices Series titles [Vyrso] – several problems: all are missing series field: The Liturgical Year (Chittister), Fasting: The Ancient Practices (McKnight), Finding Our Way Again (McLaren), In Constant Prayer (Benson), Sabbath (Allender), The Sacred Journey (Foster), The Sacred Meal (Gallagher), Tithing (LeBlanc); whole series also has inconsistent titling (some titles include “: The Ancient Practices” as subtitle; some include “: The Ancient Practices Series”; some include only the subtitle that is on the cover; one includes that subtitle plus “- The Ancient Practices Series”); “In constant prayer” is not capitalized properly
- A series title hasn’t been added for these books, as Vyrso books do not use them.
- Anne Bradstreet [Vyrso] (Christian Encounters Series) – author is listed as “Kellogg, D.B.; Kellogg, Kellogg”; the second one is an error (see http://amzn.com/1595551093 to verify); also missing series name
- Series titles are used for Logos editions, and not usually applied to Vyrso books.
- Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library - This is a collection, not a series. It should not have a series tag. There are, however, 3 real series within it that should have series tags.
- This is actually not the case—’Anchor Yale Bible Reference Library’ is a true series, consisting of a finite number of resources, containing the series name and series numbering in the title pages of the books that constitute it, and recognized as a series by cataloguers such as the Library of Congress. It contains three ‘multivolume works’, which are handled differently than series. We often apply series titles to multivolume works for the sake of certain L4 functionalities it enables, but in a case like this, the true series title takes precedence. This ensures that the books in question are searchable by both the series name and the shared title of the multivolume work, which is present in the book title.
- Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus - missing series name
- Ante-nicene fathers/post-nicene fathers should be type:ancient manuscripts. [Stet. “Ancient Manuscript” isn’t used for translations. See above]
- American Commentary - some volumes lack series name (see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/67945.aspx)
- I have added the series title to as many of these as I could confirm. It’s not unheard of for a book to be republished in a new series, or outside of its original series. In cases like these we defer to the text of whatever edition we’re replicating, hence the one “The Complete Commentary on the New Testament” volume, and a couple of volumes whose series titles I am leaving blank.
- The Apocalypse of Baruch - missing author:Oesterley, W. O. E. (cf the info panel, and also the product page)
- The Apologetics Study Bible should be type:”Bible Notes”
- The Apologies of Justin Martyr and Justin Martyr’s Dialogue with Trypho language should be Greek [Apologies has an extensive English language commentary on the text, it’s been left English]
- Apostolic Constitutions and Apostolic Exhortations - need separate series names for Latin and English, like the Encyclicals already have
- Apostolic fathers should be type:ancient manuscript. [Greek texts are already type:ancient manuscript. Translations will remain as monographs. See above.]
- Apostolic Fathers - all versions need the original authors added to the Author column, like the ECF now have
- Approaches to New Testament Study typo in publisher’s name – Sheffield Acedemic Press – should be Academic
- Archaeology Odyssey, Bible Review, and Biblical Archaeologist are all missing series (all issues)
- Ariel’s Bible Commentary: The Book of Genesis should be part of the Ariel’s Bible Commentary series.
- Arminianism v. Hyper-Calvinism has the author as “Samuel Cozens” - it should be “Philip Pugh”
- The Art of Caregiving author should be Michael S. Barry; currently it’s just “Barry”
- Augsburg - is spelled with lower case for Augsburg Commentary on the New Testament and Lenski’s Commentary on the New Testament series
- This issue should be resolved, let us know if you see any extant instances.
- Baffled to Fight Better, Not Knowing Where (Whither), Shade of His Hand, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount (Oswald Chambers) – they are tagged as type:Bible Commentary with matching Subject information but they have no Reference box and no Index. I think they should be type:monograph with appropriate Subjects.
- Because this doesn’t require adding or removing an index, this actually didn’t require a full resource update to implement. These changes have been made.
- Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics type:Dictionary should be Encyclopedia
- The Baker Illustrated Bible Handbook is currently type:monograph, but it should be type:bible-commentary (just like Halley’s, Holman and Willmington’s Bible Handbooks)
- Beginning Biblical Hebrew should be type:grammar
- Believer’s Study Bible should be type:Bible Notes
- Believers Church Bible Commentary - capitalization is wrong for title of series in citation info in all volumes, Ephesians worse than others
- Believer’s Church Bible Commentary most volumes missing abbreviated title (should be Bible book name with BCBC in parentheses after)
- Believers Church Bible Commentary title and series name should not have apostrophe (it’s not there in the print edition)
- Berkhof Collection Six of the resources have 2009 as their publication date instead of the original publication date (this, by the way is also a problem with the Calvin series). The same six resources don’t have the original publisher listed.
- Berkhof’s 15 volume collection has multiple errors:
- A automatic collection or series should be created – it’s not. [Stet. This is a Logos collection. Not an actual series.]
- Bernspång Kommentar för Biblelläsaren needs series tag
- “Be” Series —> 8 of the 11 titles need “Commentaries” in the Subjects field
- Beyond the Bible: Moving from Scripture to Theology; Christian Beginnings and the Dead Sea Scrolls; Reformed and Always Reforming - all missing the series name “Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology”
- Series added for Beyond the Bible and Christian Beginnings and Dead Sea Scrolls, but Reformed and Always Reforming is a Vyrso book. They do not get series standardization.
- BHS Morphologically Tagged Edition should be lang:Hebrew (remove English)
- The Bible and its Story needs series tag
- Bible and Spade please consider to renumber volume numbers for 1972-2008 [Stet. The magazine ceased publication in 1984 and resumed in 1987, restarting the volume numbers, so the numbering, while odd, is correct.]
- Bible Characters could use expanded titles in all six volumes to include the characters in each volume as reflected on the title pages of each volume. For example “Bible Characters, Volume 1 (Adam-Achan).”
- Bible Commentaries that are missing O.T. or N.T. in Subject. Philo and Holy Scripture is O.T.
- A Bible Commentary in the Wesleyan Tradition needs series tag
- Wesleyan Bible Commentary Series Missing Series:”Wesleyan Bible Commentary Series” - no volumes are marked as series.
- Bible History Commentary: New Testment typo in title: should be Testament
- Bible History: Old Testament is not a bible commentary; probably a Monograph like other “history” titles. [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type]
- Bible Lessons International (17 vols.) is missing series metadata on 4 volumes, including The First Christian Primer: Matthew and You Can Understand the Bible Survey/Seminar.
- Bible History: Old Testament This volume is by Afred Edersheim. The author’s name ends with a period (.), which will cause the name to appear twice when sorting by author in the Library or in Collections.
- The Bible Reader’s Companion should have N.T. & O.T. in Subject instead of NT & OT
- Biblical Archaeology Review
- is missing series data, making it hard to prioritize
- Bibles -> LEB, KJVApoc, HCSB, God’s Word are missing language English in Subject
- Bibles -> Elzevir TR 1624, Lexham Clausal Outlines, OpenText are missing language Greek in Subject
- Bibles -> Interlinear Literal Translation, 2x Old Syrian Gospels should have N.T. in Subject instead of NT
- The Biblical Offense of Racism publisher name in citation data should be Canon Press, not Canonpress.
- Bibliotheca Sacra (Vol 32 missing series:”Bibliotheca Sacra”; Vol 74 wrong publisher: should be “Oberlin College”)
- The Big Book on Small Groups author’s first name is misspelled in the Copyright notice (it should be Jeffrey, not Jeffery)
- Biographical Entries from Evangelical Dictionary of Theology should be type:dictionary
- The Book of Jubilees has a typo in the subject: “Apocraphal”
- The Book of Judges (NICOT) - the series name has an extra space, making it form its own series instead of joining the other volumes
- Brill - is E. J. Brill for a few titles (Josephus, the Bible, and History, Literary Studies in the Hebrew Bible, The Nag Hammadi Library in English, Nag Hammadi Texts and the Bible) and Brill on everything else (17 other resources) I have
- Building Your NT Greek Vocabulary is not a Lexicon —> probably type:Grammar
- Building Your Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary and Building Your New Testament Greek Vocabulary 3rd Edition - I’m not sure what type these should be (lexicon?), but shouldn’t they at least be the same type? And have the same subjects, except for Greek/Hebrew? (Also note capitalization errors above)
- Hmm. You’re definitely right that they should be the same. They’re not really lexicons, and they’re not quiiiiite grammars, so monograph will have to do. The title casing thing is part of a larger issue, so I’ll get to that separately.
- Byzantine/Majority Textform Greek New Testament - Language should be Greek only, not “English; Greek”
- CAL Targums - several resources have the correct title in the Alternate Title field, and the alternative title in the normal Title field
- I’ve fixed as many of these as I can find. There are a few titles that include some additional text not present on the title page (to the Pentateuch, usually) and I’ve opted to leave that. Let me know if you see any egregious issues that I have missed here.
- Calvin’s Commentaries two volumes, Harmony of the Gospels and Harmony of the Gospels missing series
- Calvin’s Commentaries (Updated) on 1 & 2 Corinthians, Genesis, and John need their titles revised to match those of the rest of the series volumes
- Calvin’s Commentaries (Updated) on 1 & 2 Corinthians, John, Ezekiel, and Timothy, Titus, and Philemon need to be tagged with the Calvin’s Commentaries series tag
- Calvin’s Commentaries - one volume edition should not have the same series tag as multi volume edition.
- Calvin Translation Society == The Calvin Translation Society?
- Cambridge Greek Testament: Greek Text - should be lang:greek and series:Cambridge Greek Testament for Schools and Colleges
- The lack of a series title here is actually intentional, as this volume is a composit of the Greek sections from other Cambridge Greek Testament for Schools and Colleges books rather than a volume from the series.
- Cambridge Greek Testament: Greek Text - should be series:Cambridge Greek Testament for Schools and Colleges
- The lack of a series title here is actually intentional, as this volume is a composit of the Greek sections from other Cambridge Greek Testament for Schools and Colleges books rather than a volume from the series.
- Cascadia Syntax Graphs of the New Testament - has no Subjects.
- The Canaanites and Their Land: The Tradition of the Canaanites title is missing leading “The”
- The Center for New Testament Textual Studies: NT Critical Apparatus - Default short title should be CNTTS, the standard abbreviation for this; currently blank
- Chafer Theological Seminary Volume 8 Title inconsistent with the rest of the series – “Chafer Theological Seminary Journal Volume 8”
- The Challenge of Jesus: Rediscovering Who Jesus Was and Is Type is wrong; it’s a Monograph not a Commentary
- Christian Apologetics Journal (all volumes) Series is incorrectly spelt :”Christian Apologetcs Journal”
- Christian Apologetics Journal Volume 7 Missing series:”Christian Apologetics Journal”
- Christian Apologetics - Vyrso edition is missing subtitle; Logos edition is missing original authors. (Plus they have the modern authors in different order)
- Vyrso and Logos editions always tend to diverge a bit. That’s an expected issue. But the original authors have been added to the Logos Editions.
- Christian Encounters: Saint Francis and Christian encounters: William F. Buckley Jr. [Vyrso] – inconsistent with rest of books in the Christian Encounters Series which do not include “Christian Encounters: ” in their title; also the entire series is missing a series name; also capitalization wrong on the Buckley book if you’re going to keep the series name as part of the title
- I have not added a series title, since Vyrso books don’t get those. Less extensive metadata is one of the things that distinguished Vyrso books from Logos editions.
- Christian History Magazine should be type:Magazine
- Christian History Magazine is missing series data, making it hard to prioritize
- Christian History Magazine-Issue 75: G.K. Chesterton: Prolific Writer & Apologist Date is missing in the citation info.
- Christological Greek Grammar: The Person and Work of Christ in Titus and Philippians - the About section twice says ‘Hebrew’ instead of ‘Greek’
- Fixed, and the same issue found and fixed in two of the other Christological Greek Grammar books.
- Church Dogmatics needs series tag
- Church Dogmatics, Volume V: Index, with Aids for the Preacher inconsistent title naming; all the other volumes use arabic numerals for the volume number, which works better for alphanumeric sorting
- Classic Commentaries and Studies on Genesis - would be nice if the series name was in the series field [Technically this is not a series, but a product collection]
- Clement of Alexandria - missing author Clement of Alexandria (and perhaps some editors as well?)
- I’ve added Clement of Alexandria as an author in the library. As the editors seem to be connected to the series and not specifically to this volume, and because they don’t get title-page billing, I’ve opted to leave them off of the library listings.
- Cohesion and Structure in the Pastoral Epistles should be type:Monograph not Bible Commentary
- The College Press NIV Commentary “Nahum to Malachi” needs Series tag
- The College Press NIV Commentary “2 Corinthians” needs Publisher tag
- The College Press NIV Commentary:Old Testament Introduction should be type:monograph as it has no Bible index.
- The College Press NIV Commentary:New Testament Introduction should be type:monograph as it has no Bible index.
- Come and Welcome, To Jesus Christ needs series tag: Works of John Bunyan
- Commentary on Luke (John Owen) needs series tag (e.g. John Owen’s Commentaries)
- Commentary on Matthew and Mark (John Owen) needs series tag (e.g. John Owen’s Commentaries)
- The Comission (Vyrso) – according to http://community.logos.com/forums/t/52937.aspx the title should be The CoMission
- Complete Word Study Bible: KJV remove Greek/Hebrew from Subject as this is an English bible!
- The Composition of the Book of Proverbs and Wealth and Poverty in the Book of Proverbs type should not be Commentary but Monograph; even though there are bible references associated with most chapters in these books, they are not sequential and are huge chunks; they are not commentaries and shouldn’t be treated as such
- Communion with the Triune God [Vyrso] – authors are messed up; one of them is listed as “Kapic, Edited By Kelly M.” and another is “Kapic, Kelly M.”; eliminate the first erroneous one; if you need to distinguish between creators who are editors and creators who are authors, then you need an additional metadata field; don’t overload this one
- A Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Greek Testament and the Hebrew Bible (James Strong) – type should be Dictionary not Monograph
- A Concise Coptic-English lexicon should be lang:coptic, type:dictionary
- Conspectus Vol 5-6 Missing series:”Conspectus”
- The confessions of St. Augustine title-casing
- The Consolidated Gospel by M.S. Mills – type should be Bible Harmony, not Monograph
- The Context of Scripture should be type:Ancient Manuscript [Stet. COS contains translations rather than transcriptions. See above.]
- Critical Review of Books in Religion Missing series
- The Cross and Salvation and No One Like Him (Crossway’s “Foundations of Evangelical Theology” series) missing series
- Crossway Classic Commentaries inconsistency in titles; some start with “The Crossway Classic Commentaries” some start with just “Crossway Classic Commentaries” and still others have the Bible book name first, followed by “The Crossway Classic Commentaries”
- The Crossway Classic Commentaries: John and Acts: bibliography reads “Jean Calvin” instead of “John Calvin”
- Curiosities of the Bible author is not J.H. Vincent (he merely wrote the Introduction). It is T.B.E. of Washington Heights, “a New York Sunday School Superintendant.” Need to do some research to find his last name.
- Daily Light on the Daily Path: The Classic Devotional Book For Every Morning and Evening in the Very Words of Scripture - type should be Calendar Devotional
- Vyrso books are always set to monograph, it’s part of their “light touch, low price” design. For the same reason, they never have milestones embedded, and ‘calendar devotional’ is a resource type with milestone-dependant functionality attached.
- Daily Study Bible Books by William Barclay should have author “Barclay, William”.
- Daily Study Bible I & II Kings; and Joshua, Judges, Ruth should both have as author “Auld, A. Graeme” for consistency with “The Dead Sea Scrolls in their Historical Context” (note the punctuation)
- A Daybook of Prayer: Meditations, Scriptures and Prayers to Draw Near to the Heart of God - type should be Calendar Devotional
- The Dead Sea Scrolls: Study Edition (Translations) - should not be type:Ancient Manuscript.
- This is an unhappy exception to our usual resource type rules. The Dead Sea Scrolls: Study Edition (Translations) has to stay the same resource type as the other Dead Sea Scrolls: Study Editions resources, or the resource association tool won’t work properly. Functionality trumps. The type was set to Ancient Manuscript.
- Deeper into the Word: Reflections on 100 Words From the New Testament [Vyrso] – author is listed twice, once as Kery Wratt Kent, once as Keri Wyatt Kent; the latter is correct; remove the former, bogus one
- Designed for Devotion: A 365-Day Journey from Genesis to Revelation - type should be Calendar Devotional
- Detroit Baptist Seminary Journal Volume 13 Missing series:”Detroit Baptist Seminary Journal”
- Dictionnaire biblique pour tous should be type “Encylopedia” not “Dictionary”
- A Dictionary of the Bible (by Phillip Schaff) – type should be Encyclopedia, not Dictionary
- A Dictionary of Biblical Tradition in English Literature should be type:Dictionary
- Dictionary of Bible Themes should be type:dictionary
- Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels and Dictionary of Paul and his letters belong to the series:IVP Dictionary of the New Testament.
- Dictionary of Women in Church History should be type:dictionary
- Drawing Closer to God: 365 Daily Meditations on Questions from Scripture - type should be Calendar Devotional
- Early Church Fathers append abbreviation “(ECF)” to series (but see below)
- Early Church Fathers should have abbrev:ANF:(vol), NPNF1:(vol), and NPNF2:(vol) respectively, as is scholarly custom (e.g. ANF:3 is Tertullian, NPNF1:1 is Augustine’s Confessions, NPNF2:5 is Gregory of Nyssa, etc.)
- Early Church Fathers Bible Commentaries that are missing O.T. or N.T. in Subject.
- Early Patristic Readings of Romans [Vyrso] – author is listed as L. Welborn, but we know from inside the book that the middle initial is also L., so it should be L. L. Welborn.
- Early Travels in Palestine - This is essentially a collection of medieval travel accounts. The included works should be named in the info panel, and the original authors should be named in the Author column.
- Author column updated. The info panel is drafted by a different department or by original publishers (when possible), and we try not to interfere with the descriptions unless they’re objectively erroneous.
- Edgar Cayce: The “Sleeping” Medium & Spiritual Discernment (Vyrso) title has HTML code in it instead of an actual ampersand
- Editrice Pontificio Istituto Biblico == Pontifical Biblical Institute?
- An Elementary Latin Dictionary - type should be Lexicon, not Dictionary
- Elements of New Testament Greek should be type:grammar
- Encountering the Book of Romans: A Theological Survey type should be Monograph not Bible Commentary; it’s an introduction/survey, part of a series the others of which are monographs [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Encyclopedia of Christianity needs a series tag
- Encyclopedia of Christianity should be type:dictionary
- Entering the High Holy Days - subject should be Judaism, not Judaisim
- Evangelical Review of Theology should be type:journal
- Emmaus Journal Volume 16 Missing series:”Emmaus Journal”
- An Etymological Glossary of Nearly 2,500 English Words in Common Use Derived from the Greek is type:Monograph; should be Encylopedia probably
- Evangelical Review of Theology, Volumes 11-13* Missing series Tag
- Evangelical Review of Theology, Volumes 1-24 and Index marked as Monograph Should be Journal
- Evangelicals and Empire: Christian Alternatives to the Political Status Quo [Vyrso] – authors listed as “Benson, Bruce Ellis; Heltzel, Peter G.; Goodwin Heltzel, Peter”; get rid of the last erroneous author; he’s listed as “Heltzel, Peter G.” elsewhere (Theology in Global Context: Essays in Honor of Robert Cummings Neville) so best leave it that way here too for consistency
- Everyman’s Bible Commentary, Romans, Alan Johnson – Description is that of 2 Corinthians, not Romans
- An Exegetical Summary of Joel, should be Type Bible Commentary not Monograph to be like other in the series
- An Exegetical Summary of Malachi, should be Type Bible Commentary not Monograph to be like others in the series
- An Exegetical Summary of Philippians - 1st edition is missing series name
- An Exposition of the First Ten Chapters of Genesis is currently type:monograph, but it should be type:bible-commentary
- Expositor’s Greek Testament - both The Commentary and Text volumes need the Biblical books added to each volume’s title. For example: Volume 1: Matthew-John
- Expositor’s Greek Testament - serial resource association is not working correctly in the five volumes of Greet text. See the discussion at: http://community.logos.com/forums/p/25419/188244.aspx#188244 and at http://community.logos.com/forums/t/26622.aspx
- Find it Fast in the Bible should NOT be type Concordance as it is not indexed to Headwords. Unlike Vine’s (below) topics will be a slow find electronically.
- Even without headwords, topic names can be found quickly with searches and the ‘find’ function. They can also be browsed slowly in the table of contents pane. The listing of bible verses after topics makes this a valid use of the Bible Concordances resource type.
- Charles Finney == Charles G. Finney?
- The First Advance - according to the info panel this book belongs to the ‘new’ SPCK International Study Guide series that was just added
- The First and Second Epistles to the Thessalonians (by Gordon Fee); title is wrong: the correct title (on cover image and inside the book) uses Letters not Epistles
- First and Second Thessalonians by Beverly Roberts Gaventa; her name must be put in as last name “Roberts Gaventa” and first name “Beverly” as that’s how it shows when you sort/group by author (last name first); but inside the book, on the copyright page, it shows her name is “Gaventa, Beverly Roberts”
- The First Christian Primer: Matthew needs series tag
- The First Epistle of John, Practically Explained is currently type:monograph, but it should be type:bible-commentary
- First Person: Essays in Biblical Autobiography “The biblical seminar” needs to be capitalized in bibliographic entry.
- Flavius Josephus on the Pharisees missing series tag
- The Four Voices of Preaching publisher should include Baker (as well as Brazos), maybe Baker/Brazos
- Foundation Documents of the Gospel Coalition should be type:Monograph
- Fresh Start Devotionals missing cover image [Unable to reproduce this problem.]
- Frederich Schleiermacher == Friedrich Schleiermacher?
- Fundamentals (by R.A. Torrey) – title should be “The Fundamentals” and even better should include the subtitle, so it should be “The Fundamentals: A Testimony To The Truth”
- Gene Edward Veith, Jr == Gene Edward Veith, Jr. (former spelling is used on Reading Between the Lines: A Christian Guide to Literature; latter is probably better for consistency; even though punctuation is ignored in Find box in library, sort/group should group together by author so punctuation needs to be the same too)
- George M. Landes is listed first name first in the sort by author (where all the others are last name, first name); this is for Building Your Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary
- Gingrich Outline Commentaries The Book of Genesis should be type:commentary
- Gingrich Outline Commentaries Bible Themes (40 Volumes) missing series tag
- Glory Road: The Journeys of 10 African-Americans into Reformed Christianity [Vyrso] – authors listed (Reddit Andrews III, Thabiti M. Anyabwile, Anthony B. Bradley, et al. ) are several chapter authors; usually in such cases the editor should be the one listed, but he is completely omitted here; it’s Anthony J. Carter; see how Amazon.com lists this title
- Glossary of Morpho-Syntactic Database Terminology - short title should be GMSDT (since this shows up as the source of the definition when you hover over a part of speech in Lexham SGNT Notes for a second or so).
- God in the Dark: The Assurance of Faith Beyond a Shadow of Doubt [Vyrso] – author listed as “Guiness, Os; Guinness, Os” - the latter is correct; delete the former
- God’s Message for Each Day: Wisdom from the Word of God [Vyrso] – authors listed as “Eterson, Eugene H. P; Peterson, Eugene H.” - remove the first erroneous author
- God, Revelation and Authority - bibliographic citation gives author as Carl Ferdinand Howard Henry, but he’s listed as Carl F. H. Henry in the author field, and the latter is what he’s universally known by in his publications; I suggest you change it in the bibliographic citation.
- The Godly Home [Vyrso] – author is listed as “Richard Baxter, Edited By Randall J. Pederson; Baxter, Richard; Peterson, Randall J.; Packer, J. I.” the first ends up showing in the group-by-authors list (last name first) as “Richard Baxter, Edited by Randall J. Peterson”; I suggest omitting this one, as it’s redundant
- Good things come in small groups should be language:English (not Afrikaans)
- The Gospel According to St Mark: Greek Text - should be lang:greek and series:Cambridge Greek Testament for Schools and Colleges
- Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners - incorrect publication date (both editions)
- A Grammar of New Testament Greek - missing series name
- Great Doctrines of the Bible - missing series name
- Greek New Testament Insert should have Greek added as a subject.
- Greek New Testament Insert subject is messy. [Please be more specific. Currently includes three LoC subject headings. All seem appropriate.]
- Handbook for Biblical Interpretation: An Essential Guide to Methods, Terms, and Concepts - should be type Encyclopedia, not Dictionary
- Handbook of Evangelical Theologians should be type:dictionary
- Hard Question about Christianity Made Easy - should be “Hard Questions ... ” (plural)
- A Harmony of the Gospels by Loraine Boettner – type should be Bible Harmony, not Commentary
- Harmony of the Gospels by Throckmorton should be type:Bible Harmony
- Harper’s Bible Commentary and Harper’s Bible Dictionary currently list the publisher in among the authors; should omit “Harper & Row, Publishers” from authors list; they did editing but were not involved in content (see Preface)
- Has God Not Chosen the Poor?: The Social Setting of the Epistle of James should be type:Monograph not Bible Commentary
- Hebrew Bible Insert should have Hebrew added as a subject
- Hebrews Through a Hebrew’s Eyes type should be Bible Commentary
- Hershel Shanks is listed as “Editor, Hershel Shanks” in the author field of several issues of Archaeology Odyssey (vols 7, 8, 9) and Bible Review (vols 20, 21)
- The Hiding Place [Vyrso] – authors listed as Corrie ten Boom, Elizabeth Sherrill John Sherrill; Sherrill, John; Sherill, Elizabeth; ten Boom, Corrie; remove the first multinamed author
- Hippolytus of Rome. The Treatise on the Apostolic Tradition of St. Hippolytus of Rome, Bishop and Martyr (Four resources) – while resource language now has been corrected where it was wrong, the books’ titles and metadata don’t refer any longer to editor Dom Gregory Dix (two do in the resource info, two don’t at all). This is unfortunate, since the one 1937 book they were created from does refer to Dix as author – as does Logos’ product page “Selected Works of Dom Gregory Dix”. Title sort of the Latin text is wrongly not omitting the “The”.
- Editor name added to the author field.
- The sort title is actually the result of a bug that causes the title to duplicate in some non-English resources. I can’t get rid of it.
- Happily, the need to manually add sort titles without ‘the’ or ‘a’ leading them ended when we implemented a better search engine. These resources should be perfectly searchable as-is.
- The History of Doctrines wrongly has a period have the author’s name.
- History of the Jewish People in the Time of Christ needs a series tag
- The History of St. Catherine of Siena and Her Companions: With a Translation of Her Treatise on Consummate Perfection, Volume 2, add author: Catherine of Siena
- Holman Bible Handbook should be type:Bible Notes [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Holman Concise Bible Commentary should be type:Bible Notes [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Holman New Testament Commentary tab acronyms are not unique eg. Romans/Revelation & Matthew/Mark
- Hope in Troubled Times: A New Vision for Confronting Global Crises [Vyrso] – authors listed as “Bob Goudzwaard, Mark Vander Vennen; Goodzwaard, Bob; Vander Vennen, Mark”; the first comma separated listing is coming through as one author; omit this;
- How Great Is Our God: Classic Writings from History’s Greatest Christian Thinkers in Contemporary English - type should be Calendar Devotional
- How It All Began: Genesis 1-11 (Bob Utley, Bible Lessons International) – subject should be O.T. not N.T.
- I Did It His Way: A Collection of Classic B.C. Religious Comic Strips [Vyrso] – author is listed as “Author; Hart, Johnny” - remove “Author;”
- Ignatius Catholic Study Bible - should be type “Bible Notes” since it is a study bible, not “Bible Commentary”
- An Illustrated History of the Holy Bible - rationalise the two books with this title (LLS:gs_kittohistory & LLS:ILLHISTBBL) having diffferent types.
- Illustrated manners and customs of the Bible fix capitalization of title
- The imitation of Christ fix capitalization of title
- International Theological Commentary all volumes need capitalization fixed in the series name in their citation information; it shows as International theological commentary.
- Interpretation Commentary - inconsistent titles; 17 volumes have series name at the beginning of title with a colon after Interpretation; the rest have it at the end with a comma instead of a colon
- Introducing the Apocrypha: message, context, and significance - fix subtitle capitalization; remove period at end of subtitle; publisher’s name should be simply “Baker Academic” (remove “, a division of Baker Publishing Group”)
- Introducing the New Testament should be l
- Introduction and Bibliographic Information (ACCS) – should be ‘Introduction and Biographical Information’
- Introduction to the History of Christianity, with CD-ROM and Study Guide for Introduction to the History of Christianity, with CD-ROM - remove “with CD-ROM” from titles as these are download-only products now
- This is a bit of an odd one, yes. But we’ve ultimately decided to treat the CD-ROM declaration as part of the title, as though it were a declaration of edition. You never know when that kind of indicator will be helpful in research.
- Isaac newton [Vyrso] (Christian Encounters Series); title capitalization; also missing series name
- Series titles are part of Logos Edition functionality, and are not usually applied to Vyrso books.
- Israelology: The Missing Link in Systematic Theology should be type:monograph
- The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament - currently list the publisher as one of the authors; should omit “InterVarsity Press” from authors list, as they’re the publisher
- IVP NT dictionaries should have series:IVP Dictionary of the New Testament, just like IVP Dictionary of the Old Testament
- J. H. Eaton == John Eaton?
- J.I. Packer == J. I. Packer (note the different spacing between initials)
- Jacob Neusner is listed first name first in the sort order by author; should be last name first; this is for The Encyclopedia of Judaism
- Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peach in His Presence; Add “type:calendar” metadata
- Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence [Vyrso] – Current Type: Monograph (and it has no index). This is a 365 day devotional and should be type: Calendar Devotional (and be indexed for Day of Year).
- Vyrso books are intentionally not dynamic. They’re designed to be read through by casual readers, and lack many of the bells and whistles the more expensive Logos editions, including indices and resource types.
- Jesus Christ, Disciplemaker [Vyrso] – author list listed as “Hulll, Bill; Hull, Bill” - remove first one as that’s erroneous
- John Goldingay == John E. Goldingay?
- Justin Martyr’s Dialogue with Trypho: Greek Text with Notes - second author is listed as W. Trollope, but inside the book the author’s name is given as W. S. Trollope; might as well use both initials in the author field if you know them
- Couldn’t source the ‘S’ in the description, but we did find a couple of ways it could have snuck in by accident. Looks like that initial was in error all along. Nice catch!
- Kevin Vanhoozer == Kevin J. Vanhoozer
- Lake’s Apostolic Fathers - missing series tag
- We normally don’t add series tags to books that don’t have the series called out in the front matter, but since these are in house, specialized resources, I don’t see the harm in adding a series title. Also I pulled out the duplicate ‘Pope Clement I’ listing from the citation field author list.
- Lectionary Reflections - missing series name
- Lectures to My Students - missing series name
- Letter and Spirit - correct title is ‘Letter & Spirit’. And all of them are periodicals, not just two.
- Lexham Clausal Outlines SBL - Needs Greek in Subject
- The Lexham English Bible - Subject should be just “Bible—English.” in common with all other complete OT/NT English translations ie. remove ‘O.T.’ ‘N.T.’, although there is a case for ALL English bibles having O.T. + N.T. in Subject!
- The subjects are technically accurate, even if they are a little redundant.
- The Lexham English Bible - Subject should be just “Bible—English.” in common with all other complete OT/NT English translations ie. remove O.T. N.T. [The subjects are technically accurate, even if they are a little redundant].
Please reconsider as some English Bibles have O.T. or N.T. because they are not complete bibles. I cannot test for those with LEB being the only complete (English) bible having O.T. and N.T. Similarly, The Bible Reader’s Companion is the only complete Commentary with O.T. and N.T.
- Reconsideration approved! The subjects for the LEB and for The Bible Reader’s Companion have been updated in accordance with your recommendations.
- Lexham Syntactic Greek New Testament: Sentence Analysis language field is blank; should be either Greek or Greek; English.
- Library of Christian Worship (all 7 vols.) missing series
- Library of NT Studies: JSNTS on the Gospels and Acts (16 Vols.) needs series tag: Journal for the Study of the New Testament Supplement series (JSNTSup) – - These are also missing “Supplement series” from their citation information.
- There are a couple of fiddly reasons why LNTS/JSNTSup and LHB/OTS/JSOTSup aren’t given series titles. It has to do with reprints that may or may not list the series title in their frontmatter, things going out of print, changing series names, and the sheer volume of works. However, every citation that lists JSOTSup or JSNTSup as a series now correctly lists ‘Supplement Series’ as part of that field.
- The Life of Jesus Christ by James Stalker: Book info panel has wrong description (evidently copied/pasted from The Life of Christ by F.W. Farrar)
- A Literal Translation of the Book of Psalms, Vol. 1 by John Jebb. Currently the Type is Bible Commentary. Volume One only contains English translations of the Psalms and part of Habakkuk; therefore the Type should be Bible
- Lives of the Eminent Unitarians [Perseus] – author’s name shows up as “W. Turner, Jun.” when sort/group by author; inside books it’s listed as “Rev. W. Turner, jun., M. A.” so “jun.” is probably short for Junior. In any event, his last name is “Turner” not “W.”
- Living the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Volume 3: Life in Chirst - Christ is misspelled
- The Loeb Classical Library - very inconsistent author column. At least the original author and the translator should always be present. Perhaps editors as well?
- This is a weird one, but it’s intentional. Because these books wind up split into separate language volumes (so you can scroll them together), the metadata gets split so that, say, the translator’s name is not on the resource that contains none of his translation. I grant you it’s a weird, choice, but we have guidelines in place for this series because it’s such a common issue.
- Martin H Manser == Martin H. Manser (note the missing period)
- M. J. McNamara == Martin McNamara (listed the former way as editor of The Aramaic Bible: Targums in Their Historical Context but it’s clearly the same person as one of the chapters is by a Martin McNamara; I suggest standardizing the spelling with his full first name and middle initial
- The Modern Catholic Encyclopedia should be type:Encyclopedia
- Monographs with Subject O.T. or N.T. please remove considering relevance wrt the title -> Grief and Pain in the Plan of God, The Fulfilled Family, Exploring Church History.
- Grief and Pain and the Fulfilled Family both discuss their subjects with respect to specific bible books which are called out on their title pages. As such they have been given subject headings appropriate to those bible books. Exploring Church History, however, has been modified.
- Moody Classics Complete Set (Vyrso) – see https://community.logos.com/forums/t/97866.aspx
- Looks like this was picked up on the forums and forwarded to the Vyrso folks. They’ll handle it from here.
- The Nag Hammadi Library in English - should not be type:Ancient Manuscript.
- This is due to a bug. Resource association breaks if the two books are different types. We’ve left this as Ancient Manuscript to keep the tooling intact.
- Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah by Richard D. Patterson (Biblical Studies Press) missing cover art; others in the series have it
- NASB Topical Index should be type:Concordance as it is similar to NASUEECB
- Nelson’s Study Bible should be type:Bible Notes not type:Bible Commentary in keeping with how other Study Bibles are classified
- Nelson’s Topical Bible Index should be type:Concordance as it is similar to NASUEECB
- Nelson’s Annual Preacher’s Sourcebook missing Series tag for 2003 & 2005 editions. Subject should also be the same as the rest of the series.
- New American Commentary on Hebrews needs to be Series: New American Commentary NOT The New American Commentary
- New Bible Commentary - only author listed is D. A. Carson; but there are four authors (editors): D. A. Carson, R. T. France, J. A. Motyer, and G. J. Wenham; they are correctly all indicated in the citation, but not in the Author field
- New Dictionary of Sacramental Worship should be part of a series with the other Liturgical press works that have “Dictionary” in their title, and perhaps other works in the “Collegeville Catholic Reference Library” series (see product by that title; Liturgical Press considers the whole thing a series)
- This is a tricky one. The series page on Lit Press’s website lists the two CD Rom collections as its parts, not the individual dictionaries (hardcopies of which are also available via the website). Since none of the books in question contain a series name in their front matter, I’m inclined to consider this a collection, and not a series.
- The New Encyclopedia of Christian Quotations should be type:Encyclopedia [It’s a book of quotations more than an encyclopedia. It has no definitions of terms or articles or headwords. Just quotes.]
- New Manners and Customs of the Bible should be type:Bible Notes [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- New Nave’s Topical Bible should be type:Concordance as it is similar to NASUEECB
- New Strong’s Guide to Bible Words is NOT a Lexicon; probably type:Concordance as with NASUEECB [Not a topical or word index to the scriptures like everything else in the Bible concordance type. Text.monograph suffices.]
- The New Testament In The Original Greek (Westcott & Hort) needs description + other metadata & should be type:Bible. See http://community.logos.com/forums/t/26096.aspx. [Unable to reproduce problem]
- The New Testament in the Original Greek (Westcott and Hort) - Language should be Greek only, not “English; Greek”
- The New Testament in the Original Greek (Westcott and Hort) - needs Greek in Subject
- The New Thematic Concordance has the wrong type (currently set to text.monograph.concordance).
- New Topical Textbook should be type:Concordance as it is similar to NASUEECB
- Not Your Average Bible Study series – all but one of these are marked as type “Bible Commentary” but they most certainly are not commentaries. There should perhaps be a resource type for study guides with fill-in fields in them, but seeing as there’s not, these should all be Monograph; the Psalms volume in the series is the only one correctly typed.
- As always, ‘commentary’ and ‘monograph’ have functional aspects that are currently determined by a book’s layout and milestones. It’s uneven, but it’s what we have to work with at the moment.
- NIDNTT and NIDOTTE should be type:Lexicon not Encyclopedia [Lengthy articles nets it the ‘Encyclopedia’ designation]
- Norman Whybray == R. N. Whybray? (his more complete name is R. Norman Whybray; should list him that way consistently)
- The author is overwhelmingly credited as R. N. Whybray, in books and in author authority lists, so that’s what we’re going with.
- Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, Volumes 1 & 2 - abbreviated titles should be OTP1 and OTP2 (not OT Pseud V1 and OT Pseud V2), as these are the standard abbreviations for these texts in the literature. Also probably OT Pseud V1 Alt should be changed to OTP1 Alt.
- It looks like this was updated a couple weeks ago, thanks to Lawrence. Let me know if you aren’t seeing the changes. ~Hayley
- Old Testament Survey Series (Smith) “Commentaries” in Subjects field
- The One Year Book of Encouragement: 365 Days of Inspiration and Wisdom for Your Spiritual Journey - type should be Calendar Devotional
- OpenText.org Syntactically Analyzed Greek New Testament: Clause Analysis language field is blank; should be either Greek or Greek; English.
- OpenText.org Syntactically Analyzed Greek New Testament: Clause Analysis - remove Bible. N.T. from Subject and add Greek + Syntax as per other Clause Visualization type resources.
- The Other Side of Good News: Confronting the Contemporary Challenges to Jesus’ Teaching on Hell - title is missing the word “the” between “of” and “Good”
- Photos from the Holy Land - type should be Media Collection not Monograph [Media collections have special features, this is really an old-school resource with embedded images]
- The Political Paul by Bruno Blumenfeld (JSNTS series, London; New York: T&T Clark, 2003). – TYPE should not be “Bible Commentary”. NOTE: In order for the commentary found in chapter 8 to function in PG we are keeping resource type as is.
- Preacher’s Homiletic Commentary – resource titles do not include “PHC” or “Preacher’s Homiletic Commentary”.
- All resources contain the series title “Preacher’s Complete Homiletic Commentary”, which matches the format of the series title on the title page.
- A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians (full title “A Practical View of the Prevailing Religious System of Professed Christians, Contrasted with Real Christianity”) is better known as “Real Christianity”; either use the full title so that a search for “Real Christianity” in one’s library will find it, or put “Real Christianity” as the default short title (preferably the latter regardless of whether you decide to do the former or not)
- This seemed like a good fit for the ‘alternate title’ field. That should resolve the searchability problems.
- The Prayer Book Dictionary - should be type Encyclopedia, not Dictionary
- Pressure Points series: three of them (Standing Fast; A Voice in the Wilderness; Who’s In Charge?) are missing the descriptive text saying which volume they are in the series [Only two of the six books reference the order they are in the series at any point in the body of their text. Numbering the volumes doesn’t seem to be a big priority to the authors, and trying to fill in the blanks would require too much guesswork on our part.]
- Revelation - several books have this title and it should be unique e.g. Ryrie’s could be titled Everyman’s Bible Commentary: Revelation and Krodel’s could be Augsberg Commentary on the New Testament: Revelation.
- We have a LOT of commentaries with similar or identical names, and we have them because a lot of commentaries have been published with similar or identical names. There’s a limit to how comfortable we are altering the titles of resources, and we have opted to roll with most of these. They’re distinguishable by series title and author names, same as they would be if you had hardcopies sitting next to eachother on the shelf.
- Revelation:Unlocking the Scriptures for You, is Type Monograph. It should be Type Bible Commentary
- One of the qualities we use to define Commentaries is that they are organized by bible verse (in one way or another). Revelation: Unlocking the Scriptures for You by Alger Fitch is completely organized by topic and not verse. The other volume on Revelation in the Unlocking the Scriptures series, by Lewis Foster, is organized by verse, and is indexed and designated a commentary accordingly.
- Romans: A Commentary (Hermeneia volume) Citation needs the “A” after the colon capitalized.
- Romans Through History and Culture Series - missing series name (one 4 vol collection + at least one separate volume)
- Series title added—let me know if Greek Patristic and Eastern Orthodox Interpretations of Romans wasn’t the fifth volume you were thinking of. Things like this can be tough to track down.
- S. Ephraim’s Prose Refutations - missing author:Ephrem the Syrian
- Searching for Heaven on Earth (2 x D. Jeremiah) - both titles are definitely not Commentaries. They should be Bible Notes due to layout. [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Septuagint with Logos Morphology and Septuagint Alternate Texts with Logos Morphology missing author (Rahlfs, Alfred)
- The Septuagint Version: Greek (Brenton LXX Gk), the language type for this resource in Logos is English; this needs to be changed to Greek.
- Sermon Studies on the Gospels: (ILCW Series B) - remove colon before parenthesis in title; also author G. Jerome Albrecht’s name is spelled wrong (Albrect) both in author field and citation data; also wrong in book content (typo reported); cf. The People’s Bible: Matthew by G. Jerome Albrecht
- Sidewalks in the Kingdom (The Christian Practice of Everyday Life Book #): New Urbanism and the Christian Faith missing a number after # (as it is on Amazon.com and elsewhere); if you can’t determine the book number within the series (the series editors don’t even seem to give the books numbers), change it to “...(The Christian Practice of Everyday Life Series)...”
- SIL == Summer Institute of Linguistics? (see Exegetical Summaries series)
- All Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge titles should include “(SPCK)” after the publisher to allow searching on that common abbreviation for it; most of them currently don’t
- Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge == SPCK?
- The So That’s Why! Bible should not be type:Bible Notes (not indexed by Bible)
- The Spirit-filled Life Study Bible should be type:Bible Notes not type:Bible Commentary in keeping with how other Study Bibles are classified
- Standard Bible Atlas - Subject field should be Bible—Geography—Maps as with other map/atlas resources (not Commentaries)
- Studies of the New Testament and Its World (SNTW) - missing series name
- Survey of Church Members with School-Age Children in the New Jersey Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church fix authors; see https://community.logos.com/forums/t/97856.aspx
- Got this through the forums, as well. A rare technical issue was preventing changes to the metadata from showing. We’re trying to track down how that happened, but for now, this should be fixed.
- Swedish resources - subject:Bibel should be subject:Bibeln
- Swedish resources - All seem to have publisher:SN Ljud & Data. That’s the electronic publisher. It seems more appropriate to show the original publisher, especially for books that are still under copyright.
- Swedish resources - Most seem to have the epub date in the Publication Date column instead of the Electronic Publication Date column. Please insert correct years in both columns.
- The metadata for these resources reflect SN Ljud & Data’s electronic resources because that is how we licensed and received these resources. This way the publication information is accurate to the edition we have reproduced for Logos sales.
- Synonyms of the New Testament is better with the resource type: Thesaurus.
- Tabletalk Magazine, January 1998 missing cover art (also missing in the resource)
- A Systematic Glossary to the Andersen-Forbes Analysis of the Hebrew Bible should be type:Dictionary as with other Syntax related glossaries. [This is written to work so closely with the Andersen-Forbes text that it seems odd to call it a Dictionary. It’s sticking as a monograph]
- A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament is not a Commentary. Propose it be Bible Notes. [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Tertullian against Praxeas, Tertullian concerning the Resurrection of the Flesh, and *Tertullian’s Treatises”, all listed as being by Alexander Souter, should also have Tertullian as author. Souter was merely the translator. Also all of them should follow the example of the third of these and have the first word of the title be “Tertullian’s” with the next word (being the first word in the actual title) be capitalized.
- I’ve added Tertullian as the author. I don’t want to add a “‘s” to Tertullian, since that would technically change the spelling of the title from what’s on the title page, so I’ve split the difference with colons.
- T & T Clark == T&T Clark?
- Tanakh (two editions) – the titles should be the same on logos.com and in the metadata, see http://community.logos.com/forums/t/73657.aspx
- I’m afraid this is a symptom of differing standards and philosophies between departments. It’s not going to be resolved any time soon.
- The Text of Earliest NT manuscripts (TENTGM) should be lang:Greek (not English) as per rest of the Series
- Thematic Bible: Topical Analysis type:Bible is wrong; this isn’t a Bible, nor is it even indexed by Scripture reference
- Theodoret == Theodoret of Cyrus?
- Thomas J. Nettles == Tom Nettles? (the latter for Baptists in the Bible where he is credited inside the books as Tom J. Nettles)
- A Treasury of Great Preaching - all 12 volumes missing series, should be “A Treasury of Great Preaching”
- A Treasury of Great Preaching - missing subtitles
- Treasury of Scripture Knowledge - only authors’ last names are given; but their full names are John Canne, John Browne, Benjamin Blayney, Thomas Scott (see http://bit.ly/GRsUsY)
- I don’t consider google books to be a reliable source of cataloguing information, and I can’t get confirmation of these full names on library sites.
- Una perspectiva evangelica contemporanea del Catolicismo Romano language should be Spanish instead of English
- Unto the Hills: A Daily Devotional - type should be Calendar Devotional
- Vatican Council II - missing series name (two publishers, but the same series)
- Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary Topic Finder should be type:Concordance as it is similar to NASUEECB [This is an index to Vine’s dictionary rather than a topical or word index to the scriptures like everything else in the Bible concordance type. Text.monograph suffices.]
- Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary Topic Finder should be type:Concordance.
- NB. I would ask Logos to review their previous finding on this as it is more than a mere index to Vine’s Dictionary – it helps one to find topics that happen to be linked to words in the Dictionary (read the first para of the Introduction). Being a Monograph it prevents one from readily listing it with Concordances that perform a similar function.
- The relevant factoid here is that the Vine’s Topic Finder is linked to dictionary locations, not bible locations. Our resource type is specifically Bible Concordances.
- W. Baynes and Son == William Baynes and Son?
- We Endeavor: Helpful Words for Members of the Young People’s Society of Christian Endeavour - title should have British spelling of ‘Endeavour’ in both places. Book cover and product page is also wrong.
- Book covers are considerably more difficult to fix, but the spelling of ‘Endeavour’ should otherwise be consistent in the resource now. I’ll drop the website folks a line, though they may opt to spell the title with ‘Endeavor’ in accordance with the website’s own particular standards.
- The Westminster Bible Dictionary - should be type Encyclopedia, not Dictionary
- Westminster Commentaries Series - multiple volumes from this series have been included in the Classic Commentaries Collections, but they all seem to be missing the series tag. See http://community.logos.com/forums/t/70678.aspx for a list. (Addition: the same seems to be true for The Churchman’s Bible. See the same thread.)
- I have added the suggested series titles to as many of these as I can confirm.
- Westminster Theological Journal Volumes 23-62 are all missing a tag in the subject field. It should be subjects:Theology—Periodicals.
- What Do Jewish People Think about Jesus? And Other Questions Christians Ask about Jewish Beliefs, Practices, and History [Vyrso] – author is listed once as “Brown, Michael L.” and once as “L, Brown Michael”; remove the second, erroneous one
- Where to find It in the Bible should be type:Concordance. See Vine’s above.
- William J. Larkin == William J. Larkin, Jr.? – both are commentary authors; the latter of an older commentary; quite likely they are both the same person
- Willmington’s Book of Bible Lists should be type:Concordance. See Vine’s above.
- Wisdom Literature - missing series name (Eerdmans Commentaries on the Dead Sea Scrolls (ECDSS)). Missing on product page as well. Other volume on prepub.
- With the Word Bible Commentary should be type:Bible Notes (comments are at chapter level)
- Word in Life Study Bible should be type:Bible Notes not type:Bible Commentary in keeping with how other Study Bibles are classified
- Word Pictures in the NT should be type:Bible Notes and needs page index [Page indexing issue will be dealt with separately. See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Word Studies in the NT should be type:Bible Notes [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- Words of Light and Life - missing series name
- Works of John Owen: Volumes 16 & 17 language should be English; Latin, because both volumes contain Latin works as well as English [17 changed to Latin, 16 remains English because of mostly-English content]
- The Works of Philo subject should be Judaism, not Judiasm
- The Works of the Rev. Henry Scougal - author is listed as H. Scougal, but we know his full first name was Henry, so use it
- Works of the Venerable Bede - ‘Venerable’ isn’t a name. Suggest author:Beda Venerabilis or Bede, the Venerable. (Coordinate with Andrew Jones as I’ve asked for a change in the tagging of the product pages as well.)
- Wörterbuch zum Alten Testament this Hebrew/Aramaic lexicon has subject: Greek instead of Hebrew, Aramaic
- Wuest’s Word Studies in the Greek NT should be type:Bible Notes [See note above on Logos’ use of commentary type.]
- The Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia - includes headword index so Type should be Encyclopedia, not Monograph
- Åkesons Gamla och Nya Testamentet - author should be Åkeson, Helge (not Översatt av Helge Åkeson = Translated by Helge Åkeson)
- A Year with G. K. Chesterton: 365 Days of Wisdom, Wit, and Wonder - type should be Calendar Devotional
- Yearbook of American & Canadian Churches 2012 - one of the authors is listed as “Usa, National” :-) There is no such person. Probably comes from “Prepared and edited for the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.”
- Yshua: The Jewish Way to Say Jesus - title should be Y’shua etc. (Correction needed on vyrso.com as well.)
Author Inconsistencies
- Blackburn, Wm. – shouldn’t this be spelled William?
- Wm. can also stand for Wilhelm, so in these cased we tend to match the text unless we have a solid reason/source to expand the abbreviation.
- Christianity Today == Christianity Today, Inc.?
- William Brown == William P. Brown?
- Confirmed separate people.
- William Baker == William R. Baker?
- William Riley == William B. Riley?
- Probably different guys- William B. Riley’s book is copyrighted 1913, and William Riley’s acknowledgements section is dated 1992. Not impossible, buuuuut...
- W. Farmer == William Farmer?
- I can’t confirm the first name of W. Farmer (I know, right? Weird) but it looks like these two authors works were written centuries apart. It may be best to leave them separate.
- Heinrich Bullinger == Henry Bullinger?
- Confirmed to be the same person.
- Howard Marshall == I. Howard Marshall?
- J. Barton == John Barton?
- Adolf Deissmann == G. Adolf Deissmann?
- Confirmed to be the same person.
- Wm. H. Hornblower – shouldn’t this be spelled William?
- Wm. can also stand for Wilhelm, so in these cased we tend to match the text unless we have a solid reason/source to expand the abbreviation.
- Michael Goheen == Michael W. Goheen?
- Ramond F. Person == Raymond F. Person, Jr. (both wrote a JSOT Supplement; so they’re probably the same Person :-) )
Publisher Inconsistencies
- Inter-Varsity == IVP?
- Confirmed as two separate publishers. Inter-Varsity (UK) and Inter Varsity (US) consider themselves separate and will even list both names side-by-side on co-publications.
- G. Herbert == George Herbert?
- Macmillan == MacMillan == Macmillan and Co. == Macmillan Co.?
- Macmillan Co. and Macmillan and Co. are actually separate publishers. The camel-casing is slowly being brought under control.
- WELS Board for Parish Education == Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod?
- Victor == Victor Books?
- Confirmed as two separate publishers.
Subject Inconsistencies
- Aggada == Haggadah == Haggadot
- I’ve edited the Aggada entry to match the spelling of the others, but I’ve left the Haggadah and Haggadot subjects intact. Many of the books involved have one of each in their subjects, to ensure searchability. A few even include both in the LOC Cataloging-in-Publication Data in their front matter.
- Church fathers == Fathers of the church
- resources dealing with the Heidelberg Catechism sometimes have the subject Heidelberger Katechismus - this seems irrespective of the resource language
- I can see the logic behind this, as the original Catechism is in German, making this subject a link to the original edition of the book. You’re right that it’s applied inconsistently, but this is one of the many areas where we follow the Library of Congress’s lead on which subjects to pull for a resource.
Missing/Incorrect Subjects
- El Antiguo Testamento: Un Comentario Sobre Su Historia y Literatura should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered.
- The largest chunk of the bible we break down into books is Minor Prophets. Whole Testament resources get whole testament subjects.
- Apologia Pro Vita Sua - subjects should be in English, not part French
- Be Amazed, Be Concerned, Be Heroic (3 Vols) – replace O.T.Minor Prophets with subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- The Bible Guide should have Bible—Commentaries instead of “Bible—Introductions”
- Bible History:Old Testament - “O.T.—Historical” is incorrect for this commentary. Its Subject should cover the bible books it contains as it doesn’t reflect all the books of the OT.
- The way we are currently applying subjects is that we stop listing individual books once we hit Testament-level. Also, commentary is a partly functional definition within Logos, thus confusing the issue further.
- Cecil Sherman Formations Commentary (5 vols.) should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- Charles Simeon’s Horae Homileticae should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- Commentary on the Prophets of the Old Testament (5 vols.) should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume
- Cosmic Battle and Political Conflict: Studies in Verbal Syntax and Contextual Interpretation of Daniel 8 should include Bible. O.T.Daniel—Commentaries in subject list
- This resource has the more exact “Bible. O.T. Daniel 8—Commentaries.” in its subject list.
- Ecclesiates by Thomas H. Leale should not have Bible. O.T.Song of Solomon—Commentaries in subject list
- Ecclesiastical Dictionary: Containing, in Concise Form, Information upon Ecclesiastical, Biblical, Archæological, and Historical Subjects - subjects should be in English, not part French
- An Elementary Latin Dictionary by Charlton T. Lewis (part of Perseus) should have subject Latin Language—Dictionaries—English like other lexicons (see e.g. Lewis&Short)
- Escape the Coming Night - remove “Bible. N.T. Revelation” as this is a monograph. Replace with “Book of Revelation” as in God, Order, and Chaos (Finamore).
- Monograph has nothing to do with the subject’s syntax I’m afraid- though I’m left wondering how a “Book of Revelation” subject got through. To avoid breaking anyone’s existing searches, I’ll leave the “Book of Revelation” subject in even as I add a Bible. N.T. Revelation—Criticism, interpretation, etc. to Finamore.
- El conocimiento bíblico, un comentario expositivo: should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered.
- Crossway Classic Commentaries: 1, 2, & 3 John should not have Bible N.T.John—Commentaries in subject list

- A Homeric Dictionary by Georg Autenrieth should have subject Greek Language—Dictionaries—English like other lexicons
- Keyword Learning System - remove O.T. & N.T. as the title covers the whole bible.
- The Lectionary Commentary
- We don’t have a lectionary type, so this is a bit of a gray area. It’s so substantially different from a commentary in form that I am loathe to give it commentary subjects, even though I normally would.
- Letters from John: A Study Guide to I, II and III John by Mills, M. S. should not have Bible—Commentaries in subject list
- The Life of Christ: A Study Guide to the Gospel Record - remove N.T.—English and list the bible books that it covers.
- The New Manners and Customs of the Bible should have Subjects appropriate to a Commentary. Note that it doesn’t cover the whole bible.
- It may not cover the whole bible but I deem it close enough!
- NIV Anglicised - should have English in Subject as with other English bibles.
- On the Admirability of the Virgin Theotokos from the Words of the Vision: ‘A great sign appeared’ (Latin Text) - subject should be ‘Sermons, Latin’, not ‘Sermons, English’
- The Outline Bible should have Subjects appropriate to a Commentary (if it is indeed a Commentary!).
- Passover: The Key that Unlocks the Book of Revelation - remove/add subjects appropriate to “a general introduction to the Book of Revelation.”
- Philo and Holy Scriptures (2 Vols) – replace O.T.—Quotations with O.T.—Commentaries
- Preaching in the Russian Church or Lectures and Sermons by a Priest of the Holy Orthodox Church - subjects should be all English, not part transliterated Russian
- The Private Ministry of Christ should list the bible books that it covers.
- The Russian Church: Lectures on its History, Constitution, Doctrine, and Ceremonial - subjects should be in English, not German
- Saint Columba: Apostle of Caledonia - subject lists wrong saint (and wrong year of death for the listed saint)
- The Second Coming of Christ (Larkin) – add “eschatology”
- The Septuagint Version of the Old Testament:English (Brenton) – should have Greek in Subject and not English as per other English translations of LXX.
- Altered the subject to something a little closer to other LXXs.
- Standard Reference Library of the Old and New Testaments (5 vols.) should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- Synopsis of the Books of the Bible (Darby) should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- Standard Reference Library Old Testament should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- Summarized Bible series (2 volumes) – replace Handbooks, manuals, etc. with Commentaries
- Tanakh (JPS 1917) should have ‘Bible O.T.-English’ as per Tanakh 1985
- The Teacher’s Commentary should have Subjects appropriate to a Commentary.
- A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament should have Bible.N.T.—Commentaries in subject list, and should not have Bible.N.T.—Criticism.
- The Whole Works of the Rev. John Lightfoot - Vol 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 should have subjects for each book of the Bible covered per volume.
- Wilmington’s Bible Handbook should have Bible—Commentaries in subject list,
- Wisdom Literature: Job,Proverbs,Ruth,Canticles,Ecclesiastes,Esther lacks book subjects for Proverbs, Canticles (Song of Solomon), and Ecclesiastes

- The Works of Thomas Goodwin - Vol I and II should have Bible N.T.Ephesians—Commentaries; Vol III should have Bible N.T.Revelation—Commentaries
Citation Inconsistencies
- (Turabian: Bibliog) Bock, Darrell L. Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament: Acts. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2007. - names of volumes in a series should be listed first and the series name after, as in the Luke volume below. Period after the title before the series name for bibliog citation
- (Turabian: Footnote) Darrell L. Bock, Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament: Acts (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2007), xxx. – names of volumes in a series should be listed first and the series name after, as in the Luke volume below. Comma after the title before the series name for footnote citation
- (Turabian: Bibliog) Bock, Darrell L. Luke Volume 1: 1:1-9:50. Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Books, 1994. – publisher should be Baker Academic
- (Turabian: Footnote) Darrell L. Bock, Luke Volume 1: 1:1-9:50, Baker exegetical commentary on the New Testament (Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Books, 1994), xxx. – bad series name capitalization; inconsistent state abbrev; publisher should be Baker Academic
- (Turabian: Footnote) Karen H. Jobes, 1 Peter, Baker exegetical commentary on the New Testament (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2005), xxx. – series name capitalization
- Other volumes of Baker Exegetical Commentary with problems:
- 1-3 John, Ephesians, James, Jude and 2 Peter, Mark, Matthew (in both Footnote and Bibliog citation format) – title should come before series name
- 1 Corinthians, John, Luke Volume 2, Revelation, Romans – series name capitalization incorrect (in Footnote only); inconsistent state abbrev. (use MI)
- Philippians – series name capitalization
- (Turabian: Bibliog) Dockery, David S. Holman Concise Bible Commentary: Simple, Straightforward Commentary on Every Book of the Bible. Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1998. – omit the colon and lengthy subtitle, it’s just marketing speak; also since Dockery is the editor, his name should be followed by “, ed.”
- (Turabian: Article Citation Bibliog) Polhill, John B. “Greco-Roman Cities”. In Holman Concise Bible Commentary: Simple, Straightforward Commentary on Every Book of the Bible. Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1998. – omit the subtitle
- (Turabian: Footnote) John B. Polhill, “Greco-Roman Cities” In , in Holman Concise Bible Commentary: Simple, Straightforward Commentary on Every Book of the Bible, ed. David S. Dockery (Nashville, TN: Broadman & Holman Publishers, 1998), 522. – omit the subtitle; fix the redundant “In , in” – for a Footnote in Turabian style, it should be “, in” for the Bibliography entry it’s “. In” – this seems to be mixing both.
- (Turabian: Bibliog) Paschall, Franklin H. and Herschel H. Hobbs. The Teacher’s Bible Commentary: A Concise, Thorough Interpretation of the Entire Bible Designed Especially for Sunday School Teachers. Nashville: Broadman and Holman Publishers, 1972. – omit the lengthy subtitle; the authors are editors, so names should be followed by “, ed.”
