Development Cycle

Typically every six to seven weeks, the Faithlife Corporation releases new 64 bit software versions of Logos and Verbum with new/improved feature(s)/dataset(s)/interactive(s) and bug fixes. Before these new versions are released officially, Faithlife provides public Beta test releases for both Windows and macOS. Typically Faithlife publishes several Beta releases over a period of one to two months. Each new release will have more features (some are exclusive to Faithlife Connect and Verbum Now), be more stable, OR be faster than previous builds – that means Beta releases can be buggy: can crash (sometimes a lot), some features might not work as expected, may corrupt (or destroy) your data, or have any number of other unfortunate, unforeseen consequences. Faithlife therefore recommends that you only install Beta version(s) on a dedicated testing account (although some brave souls don’t take that advice! – knowing some bugs exist for long time). Faithlife Speaks has links to many design decisions.

Towards the end of a development cycle, Faithlife Corporation will release builds that should be stable enough for daily use – a Release Candidate (RC). If no significant bugs are found in release candidate after a short period (a few days), Faithlife will make that release available to everyone (often referred to as ‘Gold’). If bugs are found, they’ll be fixed in a newer RC, with the process continueing until no more significant bugs are found. Service Releases (SR) fix significant bugs after Gold release and complete development cycle for a Logos/Verbum desktop version.

Understanding different versions

Alpha version: A very early test version – missing some important features, and will probably have bugs.
Beta version: A later test version – has more features, but will still have some bugs – can include non-backward compatible changes (so syncing stuff between Beta and Stable has potential to cause issues in Stable release).
Release Candidate (RC): A version that Logos developers hope is stable enough for daily use. Note the word ‘hope’!
Gold Release: The final version that really does have all features stable enough for daily use – exactly the same as final Release Candidate.
Service Release (SR): After a Gold release, some bugs need fixing for stable daily use by variety of people.

How do I join the beta program?

The beta program is available to all Logos and Verbum users. The Logos Desktop Beta forum discusses beta issues, which can include interaction with Faithlife developers. Please read and heed IMPORTANT Beta Testing Information/Warnings along with 9.2 Announcement: You’re invited: Get test licenses for new beta datasets and features!

On PC and mac OS, to join current and future beta releases, use command set update channel to beta

Recommended Beta tester behavior

Install the Beta in another User Account on your computer and use the Set Update Channel to Beta command. You will receive all releases on the Beta channel (including Release Candidate versions) whilst your other installation remains on the Stable channel.

Typical Beta tester behavior

Use the Set Update Channel to Beta command in your current installation. It is advisable to also set Automatic Downloads to NO (in Program Settings) so that you will be notified of the download and can choose whether to accept it. This allows you to check the Beta forum for details as you might not want to install a particularly buggy/unstable version!

Once a release goes ‘Gold’ you can a) do nothing and move directly into the next beta cycle when Beta 1 is released OR b) revoke the previous command with Set Update Channel to Default and receive Service Release(s) on the stable channel.

Reporting Problems

You should have logging permanently enabled because you will be expected to upload logs for diagnostic purposes to the Logos Desktop Beta forum , especially after a crash. For more details see Logos Windows Problem, Windows Troubleshooting, Logos Mac Problem or OS X Troubleshooting

Note Logos or other users may be able to recommend a workaround but be prepared to wait for the next beta (may be a week or two)!

Understanding update channels

Logos has two update channels, beta and stable. These ‘channels’ (actually RSS feeds) tell your Logos software when a new version is available. The stable channel contains details for Gold release and Service Releases only. The beta channel contains details for beta and release candidates (RC), may include service release (if no public Beta available). These tables illustrate recent versions in beta and stable channels:

Manually setting the update channel

By default, Beta versions read beta channel for program updates.
By default, all other versions read stable channel for updates. This means Release Candidates read stable channel for future updates even though they are released on the beta channel..
You can receive Beta and RC updates with version newer than currently installed by using command set update channel to beta
If you wish to return to default channel then use command set update channel to default
If you wish to receive newer stable releases, then use command set update channel to stable (can use in a Beta version to skip future Beta and RC updates)

Finding your update channel

On a PC, if you click help icon in top right of Logos, and choose About Logos Bible Software, you can find out which update channel you are using. On macOS, click Logos on menu bar (top left of screen), then click About Logos Bible Software to show version and update channel. If you have manually specified either the stable or beta channels, this will be stated next to version number. If you are using default channel for this particular version, then nothing will be stated.

A caveat

Regardless of which update channel you are using Logos will only install versions of the software that have a higher version number than the one you are currently running. So if you have a beta version (say 24.0 Beta 1) and you are using the default stable channel, you will not receive a service release (say 23.2 SR-2) for the current stable version because it has a lower version number: e.g. 23.2 (23.2.35) is less than 24.0 Beta 1 (24.0.06).

Understanding build numbers

Version numbers in Logos look like this 22.0.08. The 22 just means Logos or Verbum desktop verion 22. The 22 means version 22. The “.0.” means initial major release, which is incremented for service releases (SR): e.g. 23.2 is SR-2 for version 23. The 08 means this is Logos 22.0 build number 8. Faithlife development may reset the build number for each major release (prior to Version 33, the build number was reset to 0). The initial public 22.0 Beta 1 (22.0.08) had 8 builds by the Faithlife development team. Version 23 SR-2 (23.2.35) had 35 builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of joining the beta program ? Provides you an opportunity to give feedback to Logos developers about new features, and can help speed up development, and give you some influence on how features are developed along with being able to use new feature(s) month(s) before everyone else.
Is it safe to join the beta program ? If you rely on Logos and/or Verbum software for sermon preparation or education classes, then you should make sure you have a Stable version installed on another user account or another computer. That way if you have a non-recoverable crash, or an important feature just won’t work, you’ll still be able to teach! There is also a risk that a Beta version will corrupt your documents (such as notes, collections, favorites, shortcuts, etc.), and that this corruption could sync to your Stable version. It’s therefore wise to back up your documents (especially if you have lots of notes) before installing any Beta version.
Can I withdraw from the beta program ? Beta bugginess is not for everyone (fixing some bugs spans several Beta releases). However, downgrading in middle of a beta development cycle is difficult; see previous question for potential corruption risk. If want to downgrade from Beta to Stable version, need to completely uninstall Beta before installing Stable. Optionally can use scan command to identify, copy, and index resources from a Beta installation.

NOTE: These instructions only apply to Mac’s. For Windows, see Quick Installation onto multiple computers.

NOTE: Keep in mind that these must be your machines for your personal use. If in doubt, please refer to the Faithlife Terms.

Logos Install or Verbum Install downloads Mac disk image from Faithlife servers. Also Install Logos Bible Software | Mac & Install Verbum Bible Software | Mac have drag & drop Logos / Verbum application to the Applications folder. Launching Logos / Verbum application downloads your resources followed by indexing.

Disk Utility Restore

The macOS installation media & macOS recovery include Disk Utility – can relocate (restore) your operating system and data to another storage device => https://support.apple.com/guide/disk-utility/intro-to-disk-utility-dskutl1029/mac

Time Machine Duplication

The macOS installation can use Time Machine Backup to copy all user settings (including Logos) to new computer (or macOS reinstall on existing computer). Apple Support has:

Optional: since Logos indexes can be rebuilt, they can be excluded from Time Machine hourly backup

Caveat: if want to change user name, then Time Machine Duplication does not work because Time Machine cannot change the fully qualified path (includes user name) to Logos resource files, which is inside database file(s) used by Logos.

Copy Logos Resources to macOS

Note: variation of Method 3 for PC’s on Quick Installation onto multiple computers - can copy Logos/Verbum resources from existing Mac installation OR Virtual Machine (Parallels, VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox) OR Windows computer (including Boot Camp), then use scan command

1) Copy Logos Resources folder from your existing application installation to your Mac desktop using File Sharing OR an external drive OR Target Disk mode

Operating System	Application	Resources folder with path (username is your login name; random is a random 8.3 folder name, e.g. 96w5gowz.x6i )
macOS or OS X	Logos 4+	/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Data/random/ResourceManager/Resources

Note: by default, /Users/username/Library folder is hidden on macOS and OS X, with many ways to see contents => https://www.howtogeek.com/678112/how-to-find-your-library-folder-on-a-mac
Note: for Windows, default Resources folder path is shown, which could have been customized to a different drive/folder during installation

2) Logos Install or Verbum Install downloads Mac disk image from Faithlife servers. Also Install Logos Bible Software | Mac & Install Verbum Bible Software | Mac have drag & drop Logos / Verbum application to the Applications folder. If application copying does not work, Logos Help Center (LHC) has Unable to Copy Logos to Applications Folder | Mac & Unable to Update or Install | Mac & Installing and Updating (Desktop) and Verbum Help Help Center (VHC) has Unable to Copy Verbum to the Applications Folder | Mac & Unable to Update or Install | Mac & Installing and Updating (Desktop). Supported releases have active Faithlife development & Tech support, which includes crash diagnosis & bug fixes (along with new features). Unsupported releases are no longer being developed nor supported by Faithlife (only option for problem assistance is forum discussion with other Faithlife customers at Logos Desktop)

For Logos, login to Logos followed by downloading disk image

2a) Logos install has current stable download licensed for your library

2b) Logos Downloads Archive has last stable Logos download links for unsupported releases

For Verbum, login to Verbum followed by downloading disk image

2a) Verbum install has current stable download licensed for your library

2b) Logos Downloads Archive has last stable Verbum download links for unsupported releases

3) Launch “Logos Bible Software” OR “Verbum” application then sign-in (needs internet connection: releases prior to 7.18 cannot login to Faithlife servers as of 10 Dec 2018)

4) For release 8.4+ Library Download:

Click in Everything box to choose Minimal OR Quick Install

Optional: Uncheck “Automatically download new resources”

Click “Start Download”

5) Once downloading starts, Cancel Download

Release 8.4+ click X (in upper right corner) to close “Logos Bible Software” OR “Verbum” setup followed by launching “Logos Bible Software” OR “Verbum” application

Prior to 8.4 click on notification in main window to Cancel Download

6) Click “Logos” OR “Verbum” => Preferences (OR Tools => Program Settings)

Change “Automatically Start Downloads” OR “Automatically Download Updates” from Yes to No

Release 8.4+ quit “Logos Bible Software” OR “Verbum” followed by lauching application then wait for “Updates are available” notification

7) Type scan in Command bar & Enter

If Resources folder is on your Mac Desktop, use scan /Users/username/Desktop/Resources command (replacing username with your login name)

If Resources folder is on an external drive, use scan /Volumes/volume name/Resources command (replacing volume name with external drive name, e.g. USB default volume name is NONAME)

Note: for Logos, must not contain /Logos4 folder because Scan command copies resources files within specified path (including subfolders) into your Logos4 folder.
Note: for Verbum, must not contain /Verbum folder because Scan command copies resources files within specified path (including subfolders) into your Verbum folder.

Option: can open diagnostic log to verify scan path added:

Logos	Application Diagnostic Log
Logos	/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Logos4/Logging/Logos.log
Verbum	/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Verbum/Logging/Verbum.log

After scan path command is entered, scanning begins immediately.

After scan has copied resources, Indexing icon should appear in Menu Bar with progress.

If “Updates are available” notification appears, can “Click here to download updates”

Indexing may take several hours, can open indexer diagnostic log file to monitor progress (replacing username with your login name)

8) Optional: Click “Logos” OR “Verbum” => Preferences (OR Tools => Program Settings)

Change “Automatically Start Downloads” OR “Automatically Download Updates” from No to Yes

Change “Use Internet” from Yes to No (can control when to sync stuff with Logos servers)

Duplicate Logos Mac Installation

Not Supported – this method saves lengthy downloading and indexing by duplicating an existing Mac installation for the same username - has worked for some, but failed for others:

Note: username is your login name, which is included in the fully qualified path to resource files (inside a database file used by Logos) so this method always fails if username is different.

1) Navigate to /Users/username/Library/ApplicationSupport/ folder

2) Copy Logos4 OR Verbum folder to an external drive with about 15-30 GB free (depends on the size of your library)

3) Copy “Logos Bible Software” OR “Verbum” application onto new Mac from a fresh .dmg download

4) Copy Logos4 OR Verbum folder from external HD to new computer’s /Users/username/Library/ApplicationSupport/ folder

5) If prompted for account during login, can enter password OR quit application, then copy /Users/username/.config and /Users/username/.mono folders from old Mac to /Users/username on new Mac

NOTE: Clicking on sidebar icon with house will take you to your home directory (/Users/username). Make sure you do not look under your HD root directory—that library folder won’t have the info you are looking for.

You can use the Command Box to open and close resources, guides, documents and tools, as well as search and perform other tasks.

The command format is very flexible, so you will see a number of different suggestions if you enter part of a name/title

or omit the command, but the one you use most frequently will soon become the focus.

For example, if you enter a bible passage and the first suggestion comes from Tools,

keep selecting a Look up (or Layout) suggestion and it will soon become the default for passages.

Note that most Set... commands can be implemented in Tools > Program Settings.

Use Alt+D (PC) or Option+Command+L (Mac) for quick access to the Command Box.

Explanation of Nomenclature

{description or value} – denotes a paramter that you must provide e.g. {Document name} = any document name
[parameter] – denotes an optional parameter(s) e.g. [in {Resource name}], [in new tab]
x | y – means you have to choose one of the alternatives e.g. 11|12 = choose 11 or 12

Layout

Close All - closes all panels and returns you to a blank desktop
- the Close All Panels button near the Layouts menu does the same as Close All.
- the Close Active Layout item in the Layouts menu removes the layout name from the Logos Title bar but doesn’t close any panels.
Open {Layout Name} – opens a named layout e.g. Open Creation Study

Look Up/Go

By default, these commands open a preferred resource to a reference or headword e.g. Louw-Nida number, bible reference, lemmas.

But you can specify any resource for the lookup.

Go to {Reference} [in {Resource name}] – e.g. Go to Jn 1:3, Go to G12 (Strong’s Greek #12), Go to G12 in DBL Greek

Faithlife Ebooks has a wide range of resources, like one would find in a Christian bookstore – including fiction, self-help, devotionals, children books etc. Faithlife Ebooks are readable and searchable in Faithlife mobile apps and applications.
Publishers often run book promotions on Faithlife Ebooks, so at any given time you’ll find a number of free resources - some are free for a day or two, some longer, so it helps to check often! Promotions can also include substantial sales: can filter to exclude Fiction sorted by Savings

How to Use Copy Bible Verses

Use the Copy Bible Verses tool to copy Bible text from any Bible version in your library,
and paste it in a Word processing document with a choice of styles.

Type a passage or pericope in the Reference box and press Enter,
or choose a pericope from the suggestions that are displayed as you type.
- When entering verse(s) manually, you may need to Turn off Follow.
Choose a Bible version from the version drop-down list.
Click the Copy or Copy and Paste button to copy the text and then paste it into the document.

Note: There is a limitation on the size of the passage that can be copied using Copy Bible Verses.
You may have to use smaller passage ranges.

Copying Multiple Verses

Logos allows you to enter multiple verses in the reference box. But you will need to turn off the Follow method for linking, or Logos may automatically change your verse(s) in the reference box.

Turning off Follow in the Menu

Open the Panel menu.
Click on None to turn off linking to other resources.

Entering Multiple verses

You will need to separate non-continuous verse ranges with a comma or a semicolon. NOTE: If you end your list of verses with a semicolon, it will simply ignore you. Do not end your selections with a comma or semicolon.

Copying a single Verse from a Bible

This method uses the Context menu to copy a single verse in the default (last-used) style.

Click Reference on one side.
Click Copy: Styled on the other side.
Paste the verse where required.

Choose one of the built-in styles

Open the Copy Bible Verses tool.
Click on the style drop-down arrow to open the gallery of styles.
Choose the built-in style that best fits how you want the verse to appear in your document.
- A preview of each style is displayed to help you with your choice.
- If you want a style that will include footnotes and citations, choose Fully Formatted with Footnotes.
- If none of the built-in styles works for you, you can create a new style.

Create a new style

Right click and choose Edit Style. This will open a copy of that style template. The style name will have a “(2)” after it.
Type a unique name for your style.
Below that are the formatting options, codes and replacement tokens that create the style.

What about System Requirements and Disk Space?

For an estimate of disk space, add 50% to the stated Library download size e.g. a 10.8 GB download plus 5.4 GB (50%) = 16.2 GB disk space.

Why is the required disk space so large?

Logos has to store your Resources & Documents together with datasets & images for many of its features, and it builds a large Index which makes Logos’ search speed possible. A Library of 2320 books uses about 32 GB.

What can I do if I don’t have enough disk space?

Delete temporary files and unused OS files, which can take up several GB. If possible, install Logos on a “Data” partition of your disk drive, or move large collections of photographs and images to an external drive.

If that is not possible, then Logos 8+ allows you to select a smaller/minimal installation. Which means that the above 32 GB full installation only uses 15 GB with 480 books downloaded. The remaining books are still listed in Library, and can be easily downloaded.

Note that all your Datasets (c. 5 GB) + all your Documents will be in both installations.

Why does Logos install into your username directory?

The simple answer is to avoid the need for Administrator rights (permission elevation) every time it is installed, updated or run; particularly during the frequent background updates. This is becoming common, and is what Google Chrome does, for example.

Another factor is that Logos requires a login with a unique user identity, so Logos decided it would be much easier to install in the user profile. This also supports a church (or home) computer shared by two people who WANT separate Logos accounts, profiles, settings (and resource collections).

For two separate users on the same computer you will need to install Logos in two user profiles. If you install the same Logos account in different user profiles (or different computers) it will sync settings, documents, history, etc. between those two installations.

Why doesn’t Logos work when I install it as Administrator?

Logos is designed as a per-user application, so if the installer ever needs Admin rights it will request them e.g. to install the .NET Framework or update system-wide fonts. But if you install it using “Run as administrator” you will experience problems with regular updates of the application (and will need to run Logos the same way for the update to succeed).

Is there a faster way to install Logos on another computer?

It is possible to install Logos onto another computer without downloading and/or indexing if you use an unofficial procedure to copy resources and indexes from the first installation.

Note that all procedures will save downloading your resources again, which may be a concern with large libraries or imposed “data caps” where some ISPs restrict download amounts before premium charges are applied.

How do I install Logos without The Internet?

Faithlife Corporation does not provide Logos/Verbum installers without an Internet connection.

How do I uninstall Logos?

For Windows: Use Control Panel >> Programs and Features to Uninstall, which will remove all your resources, so if you wish to avoid a subsequent large download then backup the \Resources folder before uninstalling and use Quick Installation onto multiple computers to reinstall.

Indexing

General facts about indexing

The Indexer builds one main ‘Library’ Index for all your resources . Earlier versions have an additional ‘Bible’ Index for bibles and morphological resources. This means that searching a collection of books or all your resources is much faster than searching through each book individually.

When new or updated resources are added to your library they are built into a temporary Supplemental index which is then merged with the existing Index. Thus the time taken is considerably less than a full Index.

How long will Indexing take?

First time indexing or re-indexing can be a long process, depending on factors like CPU speed, RAM and the number of resources being indexed. Be prepared for it to take from 1 hour (fast desktop computer) to 1 day (tablet) for 3000 resources. You should definitely consider indexing overnight whilst you sleep! Indexing for a new/updated resource can take several minutes, but takes about the same time for a small number of non-bible resources.

What happens when books are updated or after I purchase books?

Depending on your Program Settings books will be automatically downloaded or you will receive a notification. You won’t know the content of the download and the size can be smaller than you anticipate because Logos uses “patches” for many updates. When downloading has completed the books will be copied to the resource folder and indexed.

It is no longer a requirement to restart Logos for indexing but if some of the updated books are open in your layout you will be notified to (manually) restart Logos after the other books have been indexed.

Can I see how much longer the indexing will take?

In a way you can. Once indexing has begun hover your mouse over the notification icon near the Shortcut bar and you will get an estimate of how complete it is as a percentage.

Is there a way to pause indexing?

There is an option to pause the indexing and the time is set to 4 hours.

This is done by clicking on the notification icon and selecting the link.

Indexing Tips

Allow first time indexing or re-indexing to complete as you cannot successfully perform a Search until it is done. You can Search during the download and indexing of new/updated resources but a message in the Search panel will state that some search results may be missing or incorrect.
To download and index with little (or no) interaction set both Automatically Start Downloads and Download New Books to YES in Program Settings and leave Logos running.
If you Cancel a download Logos will start indexing the resources it has processed. Use the Update now command to resume the download.

Logos is resource intensive and really benefits from an SSD drive as well as a fast processor and adequate memory (8+ GB).

After installing the Logos application, sign-in with your Logos account and choose an appropriate Library size dependent on the amount of disk space you have. Logos then downloads your library content, followed by indexing; which can take several hours.

Updates to the software and updated/new resources will be automatically downloaded by default, but you can change Automatically Start Downloads to NO in Tools > Program Settings. You cannot know what is being downloaded, but you will get a summary after it has completed.

Software updates are announced in the “Logos Desktop...” forum in a thread that is pinned to the top. You will also have access to the Release Notes in the forum, and via a Notification in the App.

Also, you can find which resources have been updated in Library by sorting the “Last Updated” column. Alternatively, use the Filter sidebar to get access to Last Updated and Added.

Tip: Wait for indexing to finish before using Logos, as Searching will not function and other features will be sluggish.

Tip: Many free resources are available (Logos does not charge your credit card).

Tip: Highlight some bible verses and press F7 for a pop-up comparison with your Top 5 Bibles.

The Fn key may need to be pressed with F7 on Mac.

Tip: You can remove/add sections in Guides, so customised Guides may not be necessary.

Tip: You can collapse Guide sections to improve speed and/or presentation.

Tip: Use Settings in the Word by Word section of a custom Exegetical Guide to restrict the output for faster scrolling

if your passage is a bible Chapter. Optionally, use the Word by Word Bible Reference Guide from the Guide Menu when you want

a detailed report for several verses or chapters.

Tip: Windows Control key is equivalent to Command key on Mac.

The Explore section can provide information about your Library, Faithlife products and provide access to blogs and messages.

After you become more comfortable with Logos you will want to create your own Layouts. A layout will contain your resources and tools in the main Logos window. To open Logos to your Layout rather than the Home Page you will need to make an appropriate layout choice. The next time that you open Logos you will be taken to your layout.

You will probably want to create named Layouts for various studies. To do this you will open & arrange resources and tools, then save the Layout with a specific name. You can open a saved layout out by clicking on the Layout button, then in the drop down menu find your named layout on the right and click on it.

If you have a preferred Layout, you can add it to the shortcuts bar which will allow you to open that layout with a single mouse click.

Tip: Start with pre-defined QuickStart layouts for your study.

Tip: Save layouts for later use.

Tip: You can link resources so that when one scrolls the other scrolls, change where hyperlinks open, change the text size in one or all resources, use reading view or floating windows to maximise your reading experience.

Tip: After naming (or updating) layout, you can use the Close All command (or keyboard shortcut: Cmd+Option+W on Mac; Ctrl+Shift+W on PC) to close all panels.

Your Library will show you information (metadata) about each resource that enables you to categorise or tag them, and filter Library content according to your needs.

Favorites

You can create favorites, re-order them, delete and rename them, and organise them into a hierarchy of folders. Favorites can include web links and files. Bookmarks are a limited way to store favorites using the keyboard.

Tip: If you open Library and drag a book into a folder under Favorites, it can open that book to the Scripture that is displayed in the active window at the time you click on it.

Tip: Favorites can open resources or tools into a floating window.

Highlighting + Visual Filters

Tip: You can save a Search as a Visual Filter with custom highlighting for your resource. Visual Filters can be switched off in the Resource Toolbar (as can Highlighting).

Overview of using the Forum

You probably got to the forums from the Logos main site (below).
So don’t forget to add the forum webpage to your browser favorites or bookmarks.
You might also want to add this wiki page to your browser favorites or bookmarks.
If you are new to the forum, it is advised to have this wiki page open in one tab/window and open the Forum Home page in another tab/window. This will allow you to switch back and forth as you learn the different parts of the forum.

Who is the forum for?

The Logos forum is for users of Logos Bible Software.
To log into the forum you use the same User Id and Password that you use to log into the Logos site.
- Make sure that your forum Display Name is set to something other than your email address otherwise spam bots may get your email address.
- Your display name can be different to your Full Name.
- To change your display name see Changing Forum Display Name
You will need to be logged into the forum to:
- Add a new thread or reply to a post.
- To have the forum remember which threads that you have viewed.
  (viewed thread links show in dark text whilst unviewed threads show as blue links).

What do you do on the forum?

Logo forum is useful to ask questions pertaining to Logos software.
- There are many here on the forum which are able to help you.
- There are many articles (threads) on the forum which cover a variety of problems with answers to resolve those problems.!!!
  You may want to search for a thread/post which covers your subject. Please see Searching for posts.
- The forum is useful in asking advice on which resources to use to help you on specific topics.
- Closely associated to the forum is the wiki which users have built which can instruct you on using various features of the software.
  - You may want to start with the Table of Contents wiki page.
  - Also you might want to view the wiki Home page.
It’s useful to read articles (threads) which may help you to learn more about how to use Logos software.
For the users which already know how to use the software, this is a place where you can help others with the software.

What is a thread?

Threads are articles which a user has started.
- The person who starts a thread sets the subject. (see How do I start a new thread?)
- Others (or yourself) who view the thread can reply to its posts. And it is added to the end of the thread.
- If you find a thread in which you want to add a reply, see Adding a Reply

Where do I start on the forum?

Start on the Forum Home page.
- Note that sub-forums are listed at the bottom of a Forum page under Browse Discussions.
Choose from the many different forums:
- General: for general questions or subjects and NOT software problems.
  Sub-forums are included for:
  - Learn to Use Biblical Greek and Hebrew for original language learning discussions
- Logos Desktop App: for software queries on all versions of the Logos and Verbum Desktop apps on Windows & macOS.
  Sub-forums are included for:
  - older versions of the Logos & Verbum apps e.g. Logos 9 to Logos 4 and Libronix.
  - Files for public domain user created personal book files (not offered by Faithlife).
  - Logos Notes for Logos & Verbum Notes on any platform
- Logos Mobile App: for mobile apps on Android & iOS
- Logos Web App: for Logos & Verbum Web Apps (in modern web browsers on any platform)

After you have selected a forum, that forum will open in your browser.
- Start browsing through the threads.
- When you find a thread that you want to view, click on the subject.
- The thread will open in a viewing page (see Threads).

How do I start a new thread?

On the first page of a forum you will see the link Write a New Post.
Just click on this link and it will open the Basic editor.
When you have finished editing, press the Post button below the editor.
- Make sure that you have entered a descriptive Subject before you press the Post button.

Adding a Reply

Quick Reply
- At the bottom of each post in a thread you will see the Quick Reply link.
- Just click on this link and it will take you to the Basic editor.
- Just add your reply using the editor. Then press the Post button under the editor to submit your reply.
- It will add your reply to the end of the thread.
Reply:
- This will allow you to Quote from another’s post/reply.
- When you find someone’s post/reply that you want to quote from, you will find a link Reply on the right side of that reply.
- Click on the Reply link and it will take you to the Reply editor.

Forum Home page

Basic help on the Forum Home page

Sign In/Out
- Sign in to be able to add a new post or reply to a post. Threads that you have viewed will be remembered.
- To change your forum display name see Changing Forum Display Name
Edit
- You can edit your personal page (others can click on your name link to view this information).
These are the different forums where you can view or post in.
Be careful using the link labeled Mark Forum Read as you cannot undo the marking.

This will take you to the Wiki.
It contains helpful information on using Logos software which has been provided by other users.

Forum page

General features

Once that you have selected a Forum from the home page, you will be brought to a Forum page which shows the threads/topics within that Forum.

The name of the Forum.
Clicking here will take you back to the Forum Home page.
Clicking here will refresh this Forum page.
Clicking here will allow you to customize how the threads are displayed on this forum page.
Click here to create a new post. You will be taken to the forum post editor (see Basic editor).
Click here to mark all threads in this forum as Read (careful you cannot undo this).

Thread links

Subject of the thread.
- Blue subject indicates that you have not viewed this thread.
- Black subject indicates that you have read the thread.
- If someone adds or edits a reply within the thread, then it will turn blue again.
A link to the last reply to this thread.
The author that last replied.
- clicking on the author’s name will take you to their public information page.
Date/Time of the last reply.
When you see number(s) here there are multiple web pages to view.
- click a number to take you to that specific page.
This number indicates the number of replies to this thread.
- a new thread will show 0 as no one has replied to it.

Icon Meanings

You may notice an icon to the left of a subject when viewing a Forum page or viewing Recent Topics on the Home page.

The shape and colored dot/star indicate information about that thread.

If you hold your mouse over the icon, a pop-up info will appear letting you know the basic info that the icon is trying to relate.

If the star or dot is red, then you have not viewed this thread or the thread has changed since the last time you viewed it.
on the left center of the icon is a Push Pin. This indicates that this thread is sticky’d.
- A sticky thread remains at the top of a Forum list and newer threads will appear under them.
- Those at Faithlife who moderate the forum determine how long this sticky will remain in that state.
  So they may at some point disappear from the top.
an icon with an exclamation mark indicates that this thread is Important or may have a Warning.
an icon with a lock on the left center indicate that this thread is locked and no more replies may be added.
a dot on the upper left corner of the icon indicates that this thread has been viewed less than 150 times.
- If the dot is red this also indicates that you have not viewed this thread since it was last changed or added.
a star at the bottom left/right indicated that this is a popular thread which has been viewed at least 150 times.
- If the star is red then you have not viewed this thread since it was changed or added.

Basic parts of a Thread

This is the page where you can view the thread along with its replies.

Subject for this thread
Details about this thread (found on the 1st page).
Quick Reply allows you to add a reply using the Basic editor.
Reply allows you to open the Reply editor so you can respond to this post.
- It will also allow you to quote from this post.
More will display a drop down menu of options.
- Report Abuse will take you to a page to report an abusive forum user
  - first make all possible attempts to resolve this through discussions within the post.
- Delete will open choices for you to delete your reply.
  - This item is time dependent and also requires that you have not edited your reply.
- Edit will take you to the reply editor where you can make corrections or additions to your post.
  - This item may only be available for a few hours.
- Add this post as a favorite will add a link to this post in your public profile
  - click on your display name in the top right of the forum webpages to view your Profile.
- Add this forum as a favorite will add this forum as a favorite in your public Profile.
Email me when someone replies will send an email notifying the poster that someone has replied to their thread.
You may see this signature text under some posts.
- click Edit in the upper right corner of the Forum page to edit your Signature in your Forum Profile.

Basic editor

When you click on Quick Reply or Write a new post (found on the Forum page) you will be directed to this editor.
- Quick Reply: see item #3 in Basic parts of a thread
- Write a new post: see How do I start a new thread?

When writing a new post, please don’t forget to add the subject.
And please try to make the subject descriptive.

Click in the body of the editor. And start typing your reply.
You can enhance text within your reply by selecting the appropriate text that you’ve entered in the body. Then select the enhancement from the toolbar.
Once that you have your reply finished, click on the Post button. (do this only once. Sometimes there is a delay in the web and clicking on it multiple time will enter your post multiple times.)

To get the Enhanced content editor with full toolbar controls:-
1. Click Edit in the upper right corner of the Forum screen.
2. Under Site Options select “Enhanced” for the Content Editor.
3. Click Save at the bottom of the screen.
4. Press your browser’s Back button.

    [hint: to avoid double spacing hold the shift key down when hitting the Enter key.]

    [hint: after an image appears click on the right side of the image and press Enter to get a new line under it. You will probably have to scroll back down to see the new line.]

Note: Most browsers will have a spell checker where a red underline will indicate a misspelled word. Right click on those words to correct, or add to the local dictionary.

Hints:

After you finish editing and have posted your changes, do not use your browser’s Back button as it will return you to the Editor page again.
After hitting the Post button be patient and wait for the Logos server to complete this action, otherwise if you press Post again it might duplicate your post.

Reply editor

When you click on Reply in a specific post/reply, the Forum will direct you to the reply editor.
1. Use your mouse to select the text in the poster’s reply that you want to insert into your reply.
2. Click in the body of your reply where you want the quoted text pasted.
3. Click on Quote.
4. The editor will insert the quoted text.
5. Click behind the quoted text to position the cursor there. Press enter to insert a new line and finish composing your reply.
6. To preview your reply, click here.
7. If you have previewed, and decide that you want to continue editing, then click here.
8. Not applicable to current Editor.
9. When you are satisfied with your post, press Post to complete the process.

If you want to cancel your reply (before Posting!), use the Back button in your browser to return to the post.

Adding a picture to a Post

You can insert pictures into your post. So if you are trying to capture image(s) from your computer screen and do not know how, please see this wiki page.

Your pictures do not necessarily have to be saved as files, so see How to upload pictures to the forum.

Adding Links to a Post

You can add links inside your post, to other posts or websites. Below is an example of adding a link to another post. To add a link in which you already have a URL saved in your clipboard, skip to step # 2.

In the Address bar of your browser use your mouse to select the entire address. Then right click on the selected address, a pop-up menu should show. In the pop-up menu click on Copy to have your address copied to the clipboard.
The simplest method is to position the cursor and then paste the link into your post
you must press the space bar after pasting
Another way is to type some text that you want to be a hyperlink:
1. select the text with your mouse.
2. click on the chain link icon in the toolbar.
3. a pop-up box will appear for adding the address.
4. paste the link into the Link URL box.
5. click on the Insert button to add the address to your selected text.

Editing your Forum settings

From any of the Forum pages when you are logged into the forum you can edit your forum settings.
Please notice that links shown below appear in the upper right corner of forum pages.

a) If you click on your login name it will take you to your public viewed page. See Public page subtopic below.
b) If you click on the Edit link, it will take you to a page for editing your Profile/Site Options. See Profile/Site Options subtopic below.

You can view other’s public page by clicking on their avatar within a post. Or click on their name next to a post.

Your Public page

Others on the forum can view this page, but only you can edit it.

Information includes:

The number of posts/replies that you have submitted to the forum.
Your Picture or Avatar.
This can be changed if you click on the link below the avatar.
Your favorite posts:
When viewing a post, click on More and click on Add this post as a favorite to include it with your favorites.
- If you have a lot of favorites you can click below the list to view all of your favorites.
Your recent Acivity which will show the forum posts that you have viwed/replied to/posted.
This can be changed on your Forum Profile under Site Options.

Editing your Profile/Site Options

Be aware that your account profile is at Faithlife profile
The Forum Profile page is basically self-explanatory:
- Options not shown are Timezone and Date format
- Click Save when finished.

Searching for posts

At the top of the Forum Home page and every Forum page is a Search box like this

It is a very basic search feature. Type your search terms in and press Enter or click the magnifying glass icon.

You can use double-quotes for a phrase search.
You can enter multiple non-quoted search terms and it will OR them together by default (the OR keyword is not understood).
You can combine two single-word search terms using AND (it must be upper case), but not more than that
You can’t AND phrases together with each other or with other terms, nor can you use parentheses.

The results appear in no particular order. You can page through multiple pages worth of results using the controls at the bottom of each page:

Searching the forum using Google

Since the forum search functionality is so limited, many people prefer to use Google with site:community.logos.com as one of the search terms. Then you can narrow it down as much as you like using the power of Google’s boolean operators (AND and OR).

AND is the default when terms are combined together with no operators between, or you can be explicit about it using AND.
You can specify OR using the vertical bar or “pipe” character (|) which is shorthand for OR (the latter works as well).
You can omit specific terms from the search results by preceding them with a minus sign (-) with no spaces between.
Google search understands the wildcard character (*).
You can combine boolean operators in complex ways using curly brackets { } (equivalent to parentheses in Logos searches).
You can restrict the results to a particular forum (e.g. General) by including the “breadcrumb” text that appears at the top of any thread in that forum e.g. “Home > General”.

Editing or deleting posts

Click the “More” button to the right of the post
A menu will drop down
You can Edit a post for up to several hours after posting it
You can Delete a post only if you do so fairly quickly, within a couple of minutes after posting.
If you miss this window of opportunity, you will no longer be able to edit the post and the Edit and/or Delete commands will be missing from the menu.

Following up on threads

If you’ve posted a question or added a comment to a thread, chances are you might want to follow up on that thread to see if someone has posted a response or replied to your comment. While you can use the “Email me when someone replies” option you have to click it for every single thread you’re interested in. And it can flood your email Inbox. A better way is to click on “Your Discussions” under Recent Topics every day or so and visit the unread threads (the ones marked in blue). Click on the date column to the far right to get to the most recent post, and be sure to read any intervening posts to get the full context before commenting again.

Goal

To free up disk space that is used by resource files where a user formerly had a license but this is no longer the case (e.g. temporary license has run out, resources have been given back to Faithlife). Main use case is when users no longer take part in Logos Cloud or other subscription/rental offerings.

Note: In order to free up disk space while retaining the license to use the resources some time later, use Hiding Books

Definition

This command permanently deletes all files in ...\ResourceManager\Resources\ that can not be opened as valid resources. This will include resources for which you no longer have a valid license.

Operation

You input delete unlicensed resources or alternatively delete locked resources into the Command box at the top of the Logos window, making sure the program recognizes it by offering ‘Delete Unlicensed Resources’ as part of the pop-up Tools operations, not only as a Search for those words
Logos will in the background perform a discovery of your currently valid licenses and will delete all files from the Resources folder that can’t be opened by Logos – either because there is no valid licence or for any other reason, such as non-Logos files

Notes

‘Permanently delete’ is meant literally, the files will be removed from disk and not be recoverable from the trashcan (use a backup mechanism if you want to be able to undo this)
The operation is restricted to the ...\ResourceManager\Resources folder – other folders will not be affected
In case of various copies of a valid Logos file, it will retain the latest version and delete the older ones
Since unknown files are deleted, it will also delete files that have been renamed / copied for backup purposes
Personal Book (PB) source files (such as Word documents) are not valid Logos resources and will be deleted in the unlikely case they were stored in the ...\ResourceManager\Resources folder. Compiled Logos PBs themselves will not be deleted
The command will delete resources, but not associated metadata or Logos documents, such as your Notes and Highlights
The command will delete resource files, but not the respective index information. In case somebody deletes hundreds of large files in one go (Perseus, Logos Cloud Trial, a returned Base Package) it may be advisable to use the command Rebuild Index to free up this space as well.
The deleted files will be listed in the Logos.log if Diagnostic Logging is active.

Logos versions 6, 5 and 4 can no longer be installed as new because server-side security updates mean they can no longer connect to Faithlife servers. However, it may be possible to repair an existing installation using the following links. Even if the repair is successful, the app will only work offline. On Windows, it’s equally possible that the online setup will fail. If so, ask on the forums for help to download the individual setup files.

Development Cycle

Typically every six to seven weeks, the Faithlife Corporation releases new 64 bit versions of Logos 10 and Verbum 10 with new/improved feature(s)/dataset(s)/interactive(s) and bug fixes. Before these new versions are released officially, Faithlife provides public Beta test releases for both Windows and macOS. Typically Faithlife publishes several Beta releases over a period of one to two months. Each new release will have more features (some are exclusive to Faithlife Connect and Verbum Now), be more stable, OR be faster than previous builds – that means Beta releases can be buggy: can crash (sometimes a lot), some features might not work as expected, may corrupt (or destroy) your data, or have any number of other unfortunate, unforeseen consequences. Faithlife therefore recommends that you only install Beta version(s) on a dedicated testing account (although some brave souls don’t take that advice! – knowing some bugs exist for long time). Logos Speaks has links to many design decisions.

Understanding different versions

Alpha version: A very early test version – missing some important features, and will probably have bugs. For Logos 9, Alpha versions were Faithlife internal builds.
Beta version: A later test version – has more features, but will still have some bugs – can include non-backward compatible changes (so syncing stuff between Beta and Stable has potential to cause issues in Stable release).
Release Candidate (RC): A version that Logos developers hope is stable enough for daily use. Note the word ‘hope’!
Gold Release: The final version that really does have all features stable enough for daily use – exactly the same as final Release Candidate.
Service Release (SR): After a Gold release, some bugs need fixing for stable daily use by variety of people.

Manually setting the update channel

By default, Beta versions read beta channel for program updates.
By default, all other versions read stable channel for updates. This means Release Candidates read stable channel for future updates even though they are released on the beta channel..
You can receive Beta and RC updates with version newer than currently installed by using command set update channel to beta
If you wish to return to default channel then use command set update channel to default
If you wish to receive newer stable releases, then use command set update channel to stable (can use in a Beta version to skip future Beta and RC updates)

Finding your update channel

On a PC, if you click help icon in top right of Logos, and choose About Logos Bible Software, you can find out which update channel you are using. On macOS, click Logos on menu bar (top left of screen), then click About Logos Bible Software to show version and update channel. If you have manually specified either the stable or beta channels, this will be stated next to version number. If you are using default channel for this particular version, then nothing will be stated.

A caveat

Regardless of which update channel you are using Logos will only install versions of the software that have a higher version number than the one you are currently running. So if you have a beta version (say 10.1 Beta 1) and you are using the default stable channel, you will not receive a service release (say 10.0 SR-2) for the current stable version because it has a lower version number: e.g. 10.0 (10.0.0.0235) is less than 10.1 (10.1.0.0018).

Understanding build numbers

Version numbers in Logos look like this 10.0.0.0234. The 10 just means Logos 10 or Verbum 10. The 10.0 means this is the first (initial) major update. The third number 10.0.0 is the minor release, which has an alphabetic designator when not 0 (last used for Logos 5.2b 5.2.2). The 0234 means this is Logos 10.0 build number 234. Faithlife development resets the build number to 0 for each major release. The initial public 10.1 Beta 1 (10.1.0.0018) had 18 builds by the Faithlife development team. The 10.0 SR-1 release had 234 builds, which is reflected in 10.0.0.0234 version number.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of joining the beta program ? Provides you an opportunity to give feedback to Logos developers about new features, and can help speed up development, and give you some influence on how features are developed along with being able to use new feature(s) month(s) before everyone else.
Is it safe to join the beta program ? If you rely on Logos 10 and/or Verbum 10 for sermon preparation or education classes, then you should make sure you have a Stable version installed on another user account or another computer. That way if you have a non-recoverable crash, or an important feature just won’t work, you’ll still be able to teach! There is also a risk that a Beta version will corrupt your documents (such as notes, collections, favorites, shortcuts, etc.), and that this corruption could sync to your Stable version. It’s therefore wise to back up your documents (especially if you have lots of notes) before installing any Beta version.
Can I withdraw from the beta program ? Beta bugginess is not for everyone (fixing some bugs spans several Beta releases). However, downgrading in middle of a beta development cycle is difficult; see previous question for potential corruption risk. If want to downgrade from Beta to Stable version, need to completely uninstall Beta before installing Stable. Optionally can use scan command to identify, copy, and index resources from a Beta installation.

Indexer diagnostic logging only happens when Logging is Enabled
When appropriate, upload screen shot(s) using adding a picture to a post steps. You can press Command-Shift-3 to take a screenshot, then use Preview: File => New from Clipboard, File => Save as (recommend PNG format), use paperclip button in post editor to upload screenshot.

Option: if you do not want to post your logs of a supported LHC Stable releases or supported VHC Stable releases for public viewing, you can email your zip file to Tech Support, see Contact for email address.

Crashes or Fails to Open

Logos Help Center (LHC) has What to do if Logos Crashes | Mac + Verbum Help Center (VHC) has What to do if Verbum Crashes | Mac Solution 3 about Corrupt Fonts has been needed by many macOS and OS X users after applying an Apple update. Logos4 + Verbum folder permissions in user’s Library prevented files and folders from being written, which resulted in “Untitled” menu items.

Recommend restarting Mac as a troubleshooting step to see if crash repeats.

Note: if you installed and launched a Beta version (updates database files), then try reverting back to older Stable version, launching application will crash since Stable version cannot use newer Beta database files.

Incomplete or Incorrect Search Results

Searches in Logos use local indexes based on your library. Users can rebuild indexes by using Rebuild Index command OR rebuild index for a particular resource. Refer to Logos 7 Commands for rebuild commands.

Indexer Automatic Launch

When logging into Mac, by default Indexer launches to prepare your Library: indexing, resource, and program updates. Nominally if everything is up to date, indexer checks are done in a few seconds. Can use defaults command to change automatic login launch setting:

Open Terminal (inside Utility folder in Applications)
defaults write ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.logos.LogosIndexer RunAtLoad -bool No
Note: use defaults read command to display current setting: 0 = No (Not Run), 1 = Yes (Do Run)

Indexer Problems?

Logos needs GigaBytes (GB) of available (free) disk space to index library; LibraryIndex folder needs duplication along plus ~2 GB more for temporary index files. Also, Indexing can take hours (to prepare library for use).

If syncing many items (e.g. new installation with many notes), need sync to complete before indexing.
While indexing (Blue Logos icon in Menu Bar), can open ~/Library/"Application Support"/Logos4/Logging/Indexer.log to monitor indexing progress. For ~/Library see User Library is Hidden below.
Restarting Mac may be helpful – Indexer starts automatically after login (unless have changed setting using Indexer Automatic Launch).
A cooling device may help since indexing can take hours and generate heat (processor and disk intensive)
May want to exclude index files from Time Machine Backup to avoid disk contention

Installing Logos for Mac

Logos Install or Verbum Install downloads Mac disk image from Faithlife servers. Also Install Logos Bible Software | Mac & Install Verbum Bible Software | Mac have drag & drop Logos / Verbum application to the Applications folder. If application copying does not work, Logos Help Center (LHC) has Unable to Copy Logos to Applications Folder | Mac & Unable to Update or Install | Mac & Installing and Updating (Desktop) and Verbum Help Help Center (VHC) has Unable to Copy Verbum to the Applications Folder | Mac & Unable to Update or Install | Mac & Installing and Updating (Desktop). Launching Logos / Verbum application downloads your resources followed by indexing.

7.18 and Newer releases need TLS 1.2 for online connection as of 10 Dec 2018 so older releases can only be used offline.

Kernel Panic

Kernel panics are often a result of hardware problems. Recommend free appointment with Mac Genius in Apple Store - Genius’s have current hardware diagnostic software along with knowing what Apple Hardware has extended warranties. Heat can cause hardware issues. Logos indexing is processor and disk intensive for an extended time that may need additional cooling to help dissipate heat, e.g. fan(s) blowing at computer.

Launch to Home Page or Layout not working

Note: Sync on startup may take awhile. While sync is in progress, have option to click a button to start using Logos.

Try starting with blank layout and/or work offline => Launch Logos then quickly press and hold command key until sign-in dialog box appears (release command key) – click “Use blank layout” and/or “Work offline”, then click sign-in. See Keyboard Shortcuts For Mac

Missing Resources

Logos Help Center (LHC) has Select which resources to download & Incomplete Downloads | Mac and Verbum Help Help Center (VHC) has Select which resources to download & Incomplete Downloads | Mac

If CD or DVD has a product code, then sign into Logos.com followed by clicking Redeem your Product Code. Successful redemption is like new resource purchase(s) that can be downloaded. If CD or DVD product was not created by Faithlife, probably need Customer Support to ask if resource licenses can be associated with your Faithlife account for resource download.

Needs available (free) disk space to download resource file(s), followed by indexing. For automatic download, Use Internet program setting needs to be Yes.
For items stuck in Downloaded folder (~/Library/"Application Support"/Logos4/Data/random/ResourceManager/Downloaded OR ~/Library/"Application Support"/Verbum/Data/random/ResourceManager/Downloaded) – can try typing “Scan” and path to file(s) in command bar, wait until you see that combination appear in picker, then click on path (or press enter). Note: scan no longer needs a restart. For ~/Library see User Library is Hidden below.

Reset Logos User Files

Note: If using a supported Stable release, can contact Logos Tech Support if the program does not seem to be functioning properly.

If have adequate free disk space (twice size of resources), can use Copy Logos Resources to macOS (Supported – saves resource downloading) to delete, then recreate your local Logos user files (without re-downloading all your Logos resource files).

Slow Performance

Logos Help Center has Optimizing Logos Performance & Verbum Help Center has Optimizing Verbum Performance.

Logos/Verbum is a resource intensive program that benefits from faster processors (CPU and Graphics) plus faster disk drive(s). Solid State Disk (SSD) is noticeably faster; Mac Book Air with SSD has decent performance Other World Computing benchmarked SSD’s using 2010 iMac Tom’s Hardware reviewed Seagate’s Hybrid drive; forum Mea Culpa re: Logos for Mac Speed describes Logos experience with hybrid drive

Logos Indexing is resource intensive – good idea to connect power adapter and laptop cooler – let indexing complete before using Logos (wait for blue Logos icon to disappear from menu bar)
Periodically clear Logos history
Speeding up Logos responses and Logos Running Slowly have some tweaks in Logos (e.g. change program setting Use Internet to Off – loses sync backups to Logos servers)
Time Machine Backup configuration can exclude indexes that Logos can rebuild – helps avoid slowdown discussed in forum Time Machine and Logos indexer DO NOT like each other! (also applies to online “cloud” backup software)

- Optimize Spotlight - option: remove /Users/username/Library/"Application Support"/Logos4
  & /Users/username/Library/"Application Support"/Verbum folders from Spotlight Indexing. Note: username is your login name
  - Configure Spotlight to exclude Logos4 & Verbum folders from indexing
- Optimize Virtual Memory - if Paging, can uncheck “use secure virtual memory” for speed improvement
- Solid State Disk Reconditioning - older Solid State Disks (SSD) may need periodic reconditioning (during searching, Logos can create many small temp files)
Paging is one cause for spinning rainbow wheel (Spinning Beach Ball) as memory is written to/from disk.

Activity Monitor can show System Memory usage, including Dock Icon (can add Activity Monitor to Dock – Open at Login):

Can watch System Memory Dock Icon – when Green slice is small or non-existent, paging probably happening.

After restarting Mac, Page outs is 0 byte. While using Mac programs, if Page outs becomes large number (especially GB’s), upgrading RAM good idea.

If Mac already has maximum RAM installed, using fewer programs at same time or upgrading Mac are good ideas.

Spinning Beach Ball

Observation: opening Logos while securely emptying trash can cause a Spinning Beach Ball cursor (due to disk contention).

Time Machine Backup

Since Bible + Library Indexes can be rebuilt (using rebuild index command), may want to exclude couple folders from backup:

/Users/username/Library/"Application Support"/Logos4/Data/random/BibleIndex

/Users/username/Library/"Application Support"/Logos4/Data/random/LibraryIndex

Note: username is your login name; random is a random 8.3 folder name created by Logos (e.g. qofvuuiv.o15).

Uninstalling Logos for Mac

Before Uninstalling, recommend restarting Mac (see if issue goes away) and launch to blank layout, see sign-in tip

Note: If using a supported Stable release, before uninstalling, please contact Tech Support if the program does not seem to be functioning properly. An uninstall/reinstall may not be the solution. Beta issue(s) are discussed in Logos Desktop Beta forum

In Finder window, Home icon appears next to your username for quick access to /Users/username For ~/Library see User Library is Hidden below.

To Delete an item: can drag item to trash OR right click on item, then click “Move to Trash” OR highlight item, then press Command-Delete.
Optional: Restart Mac + empty trash after deletion.

Before Uninstalling, close (or force quit) Logos and Indexer (if blue Logos icon on menu bar, click icon, then click Cancel).
To Uninstall Logos, delete application, caches, launch agent, parameter list (plist), and mono configuration files (username is your login name):
1. Delete Logos from your Dock
2. Delete Logos application (nominally from Applications folder)
3. Delete com.logos.Logos in /Users/username/Library/Caches
4. Delete com.logos.LogosIndexer in /Users/username/Library/Caches (folder may not exist)
5. Delete com.logos.LogosIndexer.plist in /Users/username/Library/LaunchAgents
6. Delete com.logos.Logos.plist in /Users/username/Library/Preferences
7. Delete com.logos.LogosCEF.plist in /Users/username/Library/Preferences (file may not exist)
8. Delete com.logos.LogosInstaller.plist in /Users/username/Library/Preferences (file may not exist)
9. Delete com.logos.Logos.savedState in /Users/username/Library/Saved Application State (folder may not exist)
10. Delete logos in /Users/username/.mono/registry/CurrentUser/software (folder .mono nominally hidden)
  - Finder => Go menu => Go to Folder... => ~/.mono/registry/CurrentUser/software (Go) => Delete logos and logos4
    OR
  1. Open Terminal (inside Utility folder in Applications)
  2. rm -rf ~/.mono/registry/CurrentUser/software/logos*
  3. Quit Terminal
11. Optional: Delete keypairs in /Users/username/.config/.mono/keypairs (folder .config nominally hidden)
  - Finder => Go menu => Go to Folder... => ~/.config/.mono (Go) => Delete keypairs
    OR
  1. Open Terminal (inside Utility folder in Applications)
  2. rm -rf ~/.config/.mono/keypairs
  3. Quit Terminal
If want to Completely Uninstall,
- With download of all your Logos resources, then delete /Users/username/Library/"Application Support"/Logos4 folder

- Avoid download by using Copy Logos Resources to macOS, including Note to delete Logos4 folder after saving Resources folder.

Want to downgrade from Beta to Stable

Beta bugginess is not for everyone (fixing some bugs spans several Beta releases). However, downgrading in middle of a Beta development cycle is difficult. Potential Risk: some documents may not sync to a Stable release eg. a new feature or format. If want to downgrade from Beta to Stable version, need to Completely Uninstall Beta using Uninstalling Logos for Mac, then install Stable using Installing Logos for Mac OR Copy Logos Resources to macOS (avoids re-downloading many of your Logos resource files).

Transition option: can use command Set Update Channel to Default for automatic transition to Stable channel for current development cycle (Beta updates followed by “Gold” and service releases). If want no more Beta updates, can use command Set Update Channel to Stable (only future “Gold” and service releases).
